Located in Jacksonville, Florida, River Oak Center is a non-profit academic and treatment sober house school that specializes in the care of students between the ages of 14 and 19 struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders. Founded in 2014, River Oak Center incorporates a supplemental school curriculum with a recovery program where students can pursue goals within the confines of in a renewing, sober environment. Often referred to as “The ROC,” the facility operates within the framework of the 12-step recovery model.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning at River Oak Center, students undergo a comprehensive assessment that helps the staff design the best possible care curriculum tailored to the specific needs of the individual. The academic treatment programming is ideal for teenagers that cannot commit to a residential treatment facility, as well as individuals that have difficulty transitioning back into regular school life after an extended treatment stay. Students’ progress is carefully monitored and must meet certain criteria to move their several phases at the school.

River Oak Center utilizes a multifaceted treatment model that integrates an array of therapeutic methods like evidence-based models, life skills training, experiential therapy and the 12-step recovery model. Students engage in individual and group counseling sessions as well as EMDR sessions to treat trauma as a causal component of current conditions. The school also provides psychoeducation courses that focus on relapse prevention topics like coping strategies and triggers. Students also participate in therapeutic outdoor activities like gardening as well as holistic methods like yoga and meditation. In addition, students are constantly working with counselors to stay on track towards achieving goals. Teachers at River Oak Center utilize an array of research-based instruction methods including information sequencing, face to face instruction and online teaching.

The River Oak Center is comprised of Master’s-level counselors and addiction specialist and teachers. While the school does not provide medication management, many students must be under the care of a psychiatrist before beginning.
