The Basics
River City Comprehensive Counseling Services is a network of outpatient treatment facilities for mental health conditions, including support for dual diagnoses and treatment services for clients who are children. An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available for those in acute psychiatric distress. The facilities are located in and around the Richmond, Virginia area. The organization was founded in 2008 by social workers with extensive experience in treating mental health and substance abuse.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment modalities include DBT, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), CBT, MATRIX therapies and Applied Behavior Analysis therapy (ABA). MAT may include Suboxone, Naltrexone or Methadone treatment. Certain staff members specialize in grief treatment, childhood trauma resolution, PTSD, bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and therapies for LGBTQ and autism spectrum individuals.
Crisis stabilization is available for clients who have experienced “a severe decline in their mental and emotional well-being.” The program involves individual and family counseling, around-the-clock on-call support and connection to community resources. It is also offered to those who have been recently discharged from a hospital or psychiatric unit.
The IOP integrates primary care with behavioral services and spiritual well-being. This is meant to reduce emergency room visits and inpatient admissions, improve general outcomes for clients and connect them with community resources. This includes mental health skill-building. The Mental Health Skill Building service involves a comprehensive assessment and an individualized, goal-based treatment plan. Therapies may involve building support and coping strategies, medication management, education, daily living strategy development and community resource integration. This program is intended to help clients achieve community stability and maintain independence within an appropriate environment.
The Intensive In-Home Counseling program is available for children and adolescents who “are at risk of an out-of-home placement, or [are]transitioning back into the home following a psychiatric hospitalization or other out-of-home placement.” This level of care integrates individual and family counseling with case management and in-home support services.
The Veteran’s Employment Program helps veterans find gainful employment, and includes everything from help building resumes to mental health counseling. In addition, there are bi-weekly seminars with guest speakers and regional employment representatives. This service does not require an appointment and is free of charge for those meeting admission criteria.
Alcohol counseling and treatment are available to those who have received a DUI charge, both pre- and post-trial. Groups last an hour and follow an established curriculum. Individual sessions are also offered.
In-office therapy is goal-based and offered to individuals, couples and families. Group therapy is also available.
Staff is comprised of a QMHP-A, a Master’s-level social worker, LCSWs, Bachelor’s-level therapists, Bachelor’s- and Master’s-level addiction counselors, physicians, a PharmD., a pharmacist, an MSW, a BSSW, opioid treatment specialists, RNs, LPNs and an art therapist. River City Comprehensive Counseling Services also has an internship program.
Extras
River City Comprehensive Counseling Services also offers a Training and Professional Development program meant to help increase efficiency in the workplace through dynamic workshops. Topics may include managing stress, developing interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution. Tragedy counseling is available, as are substance abuse screening and assessments.
In Summary
With a large number of programs that run the gamut of client needs, River City Comprehensive Counseling Services seems to have treatments for individuals in any circumstance. From weekly therapy visits to an IOP, clients can choose the appropriate level of care and avoid, if necessary, undue hospitalization. Its in-home children and adolescent treatment is also an unusual, and important, option for young clients and their families.
