Encino CaliforniaRestore Health and Wellness Review

Restore Health and Wellness Center is a luxury treatment facility located in Encino, California. Opened in May of 2015, Restore Health was founded with the aim to change the structure and approach of residential treatment commonly found in California. Through trauma-informed care and a highly structured living environment, Restore Health’s treatment approach is client-centered and treats the causes and conditions of addiction rather than just the symptoms of the disease.

Accommodations and Food

The Restore Health treatment facility is a 5,000 square-foot clinic in the city of Encino in the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles outside of Los Angeles. The residential accommodations are in Northridge, just six miles north. Clients are housed in a 6,500 square-foot home that sleeps up to 22 clients who are in the first phase of treatment.

The California ranch-style mansion is a single-story residential house with two separate gender-specific wings. Each wing has six double-occupancy bedrooms with one single reserved for round-the-clock supervisors. There are three bathrooms per wing and bedrooms are furnished with two full- or queen-size beds. All linens are provided as are closets, storage space and general supplies. Additional quarters are available in the pool house situated in the backyard which has two communal living areas with TVs, cable access and comfortable seating areas for socializing. Office spaces with shared computers are available for supervised use at both the residence and the treatment facility.

The landscaped grounds feature brick walking paths, a pool, two gazebos and an outdoor kitchen for cookouts and enjoying the year-round great weather. Volleyball and tennis courts are also available. The home has a full-service kitchen that is operated by a private chef who prepares a daily continental breakfast with coffee and tea as well as lunch and dinner with a range of healthy and comfort foods. Meals are nutritious and meet the dietary needs of clients while also also satisfying cravings. Energy drinks may be consumed but only on outings and in limited quantity.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Restore Health is primarily inpatient with an option to step down to outpatient care following completion of the residential program. The facility is also currently in the process of certification for detox services.

The credentialed treatment team provide a full continuum of care and clients typically remain in residence for 30 to 45 days. Therapeutic techniques focus on trauma-informed care and includes dual diagnosis support for those with co-occurring disorders. Clinical staff also provide EMDR and similar methods that help individuals with PTSD or other forms of trauma heal from the effects of past events that may be contributing to substance abuse.

Throughout the course of treatment, clients must attend some form of support on a daily basis. Residents are brought to area 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery and Refuge Recovery meetings. In addition to support meetings, clients also attend a minimum of two individual therapy sessions per week with a Masters-level clinician. Residents must participate in a minimum of one group therapy session each day, but often attend more than one.

Clients are engaged in intensive treatment during the first phase of their program. For 30 days, they engage in daily therapeutic activities and must adhere to a structured schedule. All first-phase residents live in the main house. After the initial 30 days, residents may move into a second living space less than a mile away. During phase two, clients engage in an outpatient style track, with treatment falling between a highly-structured outpatient program and a sober living environment. Residents are permitted more freedom and autonomy including cell phone use, laptop access and more outings.

Visitation hours are available on weekends, though guests are dependent upon clinical staff approval. Free time is allowed between scheduled required groups, individual sessions and meals. Clients can enjoy the tennis courts, pool and volleyball courts or watch TV. All residents also participate in a fitness recovery program called RecoveryFit, which was developed by staff member Rick Hagaman and incorporates the spiritual aspects of 12-step recovery with a fitness program. This fitness regime aims to produce endorphins and healthy self esteem. Clients also learn martial arts from one of the onsite managers who specializes in specific disciplines.

All clients are seen by a team of clinicians including LCSWs, MFTs, psychiatrists and others who are intern-level practitioners in process of receiving their license. Residents also receive general health care from medical doctors prior to enrollment.
