West Palm Beach FloridaThe Basics

Founded in 2009 by Matthew Cooper in West Palm Beach, Florida, Recovery Way Sober Living provides a safe living environment for men recovering from chemical dependency. Cooper, who has been in recovery for 28 years, has a no-nonsense approach. His mission is to help clients build a strong basis in their recovery by working a thorough 12-step program, as well as helping them dismiss any self-deprecating notions by assisting them in becoming productive members of society.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Recovery Way house is a 5,000 square foot pink two-story residence nestled on a large lot. The location is within walking distance of public transportation, and is in close vicinity to many stores, businesses and 12-step meetings. At Recovery Way, 16 clients are accommodated. Men are paired in double-occupancy rooms, which include twin beds, dressers and closets. Some rooms have patio doors, as residence has small balconies on the second floor. There is a covered patio with wall-to-wall windows, which includes porch tables, chairs and two huge refrigerators. Amenities include Wi-Fi, a landline with free domestic calling, cable TV and laundry facilities. Staff lives on the premises.

The home includes a spacious common areas and a fully equipped kitchen. At Recovery Way, men are assisted with applying for food stamps, social security cards and bus passes. Until they secure employment and are able to afford groceries, the house supplies food. Residents prepare their own meals. The initial 30-day cost is $1,140 and includes food, rent and tobacco. Nonsmokers or men who purchase their own cigarettes pay an initial 30-day cost of $980. After residents start working, and receive food stamps and buy their own tobacco, if appropriate, the 30-day cost is $740.

Rules and Regulations

While Cooper prefers clients that have undergone primary care at a drug rehab, he occasionally takes men who have been clean and sober for only several days. All potential clients must have undergone detox and be physically stable before moving in. Additionally, clients undergo a comprehensive interview prior to being accepted into the house. Cooper admits about one out of seven applicants.

Requirements include obtaining employment, getting a sponsor and a home group, attending 12-step meetings and performing household chores. For the first 30 days, men attend between one and two daily AA/NA/CA meetings. After that, they are encouraged to attend one daily meeting. Staff works closely with clients, and helps them find jobs. Additionally, staff helps residents secure a home group and sponsor. During the first 30 days, the curfew is 11 pm. After that, the curfew is extended on a case-by-case basis.

At Recovery Way, clients with vehicles are able to use them after 30 days. Additionally, the house has a zero tolerance policy. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Those who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises and are forbidden to return forever. Recovery Way sticks to this rule.

Extras

During the first month, parents are allowed to pay for their sons’ rent. After that time, residents are required to be responsible for their own housing and food costs.

In Summary

Cooper is passionate about recovery and about helping his men, but hand-picks clients who are willing to follow his particular brand of 12-step driven direction. Recovery Way residents enjoy a true sense of brotherhood. For men who are willing to go to any lengths in their recovery, plus those wanting to get a kick start on their steps, Recovery Way Sober Living is a great fit.
