Dayton OhioThe Basics

As part of the Public Health System of Dayton and Montgomery County, the Public Health Addiction Services provides outpatient counseling for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. PHDMC offers treatment for residents throughout Montgomery County and the surrounding Dayton, Ohio community, with gender-specific and age-specific peer support groups using evidence-based methods.

Treatment and Staff

Those interested in substance abuse treatment must first be evaluated by a licensed clinician. Once assessed, people who are eligible will be placed in either the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or basic outpatient track. The IOP clients meet nine hours per week for group therapy (with one hour for individual therapy) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with morning or evening options. Groups utilize CBT to discuss topics including relapse prevention, peer pressure, coping skills and identifying triggers. For those with dual diagnosis, there is a co-occurring disorders group. Duration of the program is 16 weeks and clients are drug tested weekly. While working the 12-step program is encouraged, clients are free to find outside support groups of their choice.

The basic outpatient track meets for five hours per week for a total of 16 weeks. Individual therapy is every other week and group topics are similar to those in IOP with less frequency. The treatment team consists of CADCs, psychologists and a psychiatrist for those who require medication management.

Extras

PHDMC also offers specific groups for women with trauma issues, young people, male awareness and a program called Celebrating Families—a classroom and home-based education program.
