Henryville PennsylvaniaPocono Mountain Recovery Center Review

Located in northern Pennsylvania, Pocono Mountain Recovery Center (PMRC) provides gender-separated residential treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults struggling with substance abuse and addiction. Set on 10 beautiful acres in Henryville, PMRC offers clients treatment that includes extended care and aftercare. PMRC’s sister program, Clearbrook Lodge about 60 miles east in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania, offers similar services with fewer clients.

Accommodations and Food

PMRC’s serene campus is in a remote, wooded location. Clients are housed in spacious semi-private rooms that are well appointed and fully furnished. Private rooms are not offered as they increase the tendency to isolate. Men and women are separated, and only interact during certain recreational activities. Several communal and meeting areas are available, and include comfortable sofas and TVs.

Meals are eaten in the dining room, which is cozy but can serve all clients at once. A full-time executive Chef prepares all meals, which are home-style, nutritious and tasty. Outdoors, a fire pit, BBQ, picnic area and volleyball court are available for use, as well as several walking trails. A 9,000 square-foot community center is used for alumni gatherings, special events and other recreational activities.

Treatment and Staff

Upon intake, clients receive a comprehensive evaluation that determines their medical needs, as well as the best course of treatment. Those in need of detox first stabilize physically, receiving 24/7 medically monitored care. This phase of treatment typically lasts four to 12 days and clients begin to participate in group and individual therapy as soon as they are able. Dual diagnosis support is provided under a doctor’s care, with medication management provided as needed. Clients use a well-equipped fitness center, and daily physical exercise is incorporated into everyone’s treatment plan.

Clients receive individual therapy at least twice a week and attend group therapy for several hours every day. Twelve-step meetings are held in-house and attendance is required. Literature and 12-step study groups are held regularly, with clients working through the steps. Other groups focus on relapse prevention, identifying triggers, trauma, stress management and emotional regulation. A licensed clinical psychologist facilitates all sessions. Additionally, mindfulness and meditation techniques are taught. Clients are given some flexibility with their schedules, allowing for decision-making practice and individualized treatment.

The IOP consists of three phases, each lasting 30 days. Most clients that participate in this program reside at one of the gender-specific sober living homes nearby. During the initial stage, clients meet for three hours a day, five days a week, gradually moving to three days a week, and eventually, one day a week. Individual therapy sessions occur on top of this. Clients must meet recovery goals and display marked improvement to move to the next phase.

Extras

The family program offers individual and group counseling for loved ones. These can be scheduled at any time. Visitation is allowed on Saturday afternoons, and families are encouraged to contact the client’s clinical team for updates. Continued education on substance abuse and treatment goals is provided to further assist with healing and recovery.

Once the client returns to fully independent living, they will receive a call every two weeks as part of the aftercare program. Staff uses this to check-in and offers clients assistance and support.

In Summary

Pocono Mountain Recovery Center offers individualized and extended care, seeing clients all the way through from detox to aftercare. Many clients may be eligible for grants and subsidies that dramatically reduce the cost of treatment. The center itself is beautifully appointed, taking advantage of the serene wilderness in which it is situated. Staff is highly trained, and the structured program is a great choice for those seeking 12 step based recovery in a lovely natural environment.
