The Basics

Playa Vista Mental Health is an outpatient psychiatric and counseling facility located in the urban setting of southwestern Los Angeles, California. The facility is close to the beach in LA’s Playa Del Rey neighborhood, directly adjacent to the Los Angeles International Airport. It offers a range of psychiatric and therapeutic services for those dealing with mental health disorders as well as diagnostic care to pin down exactly what an individual is struggling with and better target treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Psychological care at Playa Vista centers on culturally sensitive treatment. There are a wide array of services available, including individual, couple’s and family therapy. Psychologists at Playa Vista offer self-esteem building treatment for survivors of domestic violence and grief therapy. There are also programs available for mothers dealing with postpartum complications, with therapy that informs parents of their new roles and gives them emotional support for the road ahead. Life coaching is offered as well.

Approaches include evidence-based treatments like CBT and emotion-focused therapy to help couples work through their difficulties and utilizes their strengths. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) is offered to those dealing with heightened anxiety stemming from PTSD. DBT provides a coping framework for clients who have Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or chronic suicidal ideations.

The approach to couple’s and premarital counseling, known as Prepare/Enrich, uses an individualized assessment to help shape the therapeutic framework for each couple’s specific needs. In addition to the couple’s therapy offered by psychologists at Playa Vista, a psychiatrist is trained in the CAPPS modality (Center for the Assessment and Prevention of Prodromal States), which is a family therapy addressing pre-psychotic symptoms. Treatment incorporates consideration for physical history and may include lab work, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and medication management.

The all-female clinical staff includes two psychiatrists, a Doctorate-level licensed clinical psychologist, an LCSW, an LMFT and a Bachelor’s-level psychologist specializing in gender and sexuality studies. Playa Vista’s Harvard-trained psychiatrist offers collaborative treatment with clients focusing on women’s issues relating to menstrual cycles, pregnancy, infertility and menopause. She has experience with psychopharmacology and psychodynamic processing in addition to evidence-based treatments.

Extras

Diagnostic clarification is offered for those who would like confirmation about a diagnosis, with testing for everything from ADHD and mood disorders to autism and anxiety disorders. Psychodiagnostic testing is also available for a thorough analysis of cognitive domains (IQ), academic capabilities, executive functioning levels and socio-emotional standings. Playa Vista also offers psychiatry via telecommunications as well as home visits.

In Summary

Playa Vista Mental Health offers a full range of mental health services for those in the Los Angeles area, with an unparalleled menu of treatments to care for any number of mental health complications. Its culturally sensitive and gender-aware treatment makes it an ideal facility for those who are hoping that attention be given to matters of intersectionality.
