The Basics
Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1910 by a group of pastors who wanted to help heal all aspects of a person including the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. The organization provides various levels of outpatient care to individuals struggling with mental health and substance abuse at 17 locations in Michigan and two in Iowa. Their main location in Grand Rapids, Michigan’s second largest city, offers a detox for addicts. They also operate residential programs for special groups as well as a sober living.
Accommodations and Food
Pine Rest’s detox program is located in a 12-bed house with both single and double rooms. Three meals a day are served to clients and nurse practitioners are present at all times for safe monitoring of vitals and medical needs.
All Pine Rest locations are tobacco-free.
Treatment and Staff
Pine Rest offers a three-day detox where individuals receive the medical care they need while detoxing from addictive substances. They encourage attendance at 12-step meetings to help individuals in the recovery process and refer those who have completed detox to one of their residential or outpatient programs.
Outpatient treatment includes individual, group and family therapy with one of Pine Rest’s 181 licensed mental health professionals. The staff includes addictionologists, CSWs, psychologists, psychiatrists and occupational therapists.
Individuals with co-occurring disorders who may be considered a danger to themselves or others may be admitted to the inpatient psychiatric program, also located in Grand Rapids. This is a short-term stay, typically three to five days, that is meant to stabilize and monitor individuals before they return to the community. Further treatment is usually necessary and clients are often referred to other residential programs or treated in a Pine Rest outpatient program.
Other Pine Rest residential programs in Grand Rapids include Freedom House, a 12-bed inpatient addiction treatment program for women (ages 17 and older) and their young children (ages 8 or younger); Jellema House, a 25-bed inpatient program for men addicted to alcohol or other substances; Jellema Treatment Center, a 49-bed inpatient program for men with addiction issues who are involved in the criminal justice system; and Recovery Residence, a sober living facility consisting of four apartments and 14 beds.
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for adults age 18 an over who need more treatment than outpatient programs offer meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4 pm. During this time, clients attend group sessions that last approximately 90 minutes, receive individual therapy, meet with their case manager, and manage medication with a nurse and psychiatrist.
Extras
Spiritual care from chaplains on staff is available to all Pine Rest clients. However, no one needs to be Christian or a member of any religious denomination to receive care.
The staff helps clients develop an aftercare plan so they can continue their path of recovery successfully.
In Summary
For men and women with severe addiction issues or dual diagnosis, Pine Rest offers a safe place to stabilize at their main Grand Rapids location. Upon stabilization, it can refer them to one of their own residential treatment facilities or their partial hospitalization program or set up an outpatient program tailored to the individual’s needs.
