Palm Beach Rehab Saves Lives in More Ways Than One

Rally Point Palm Beach is a unique rehab in Palm Beach, Florida. The men’s-only recovery program applies a peer-driven, holistic approach to teach clients about healthy living. But, Rally Point does much more than just help men get sober. Sure, there are plenty of treatment standbys like evidence-based group and individual therapy and 12-step meetings, but this therapeutic environment also emphasizes experiential therapies like art and music therapy, yoga and outdoor adventures, as well as life skills including nutrition and first aid.

This diverse curriculum includes paramedic and firefighter, Jason Patton and his signature Patton’d Comedy CPR class. Patton has been in the medical field for 12 years and teaching CPR for eight years. About two years ago, he founded Patton’d Comedy CPR because he discovered that, after a standard CPR class, his students were leaving with fear of helping someone in an emergency, rather than confidence. This really bothered him because it seemed completely counterproductive to what the goal of the class was—to save lives. So, he started making people laugh during the class and watched the fear melt away.

Patton has been teaching CPR and first aid in treatment centers for about five years and has been working with Rally Point for the last year and a half. He knew recovery facilities needed training that was a little more exciting and fun than the typical methods of teaching CPR and first aid, so it was a perfect match. Patton meets with the guys at Rally Point once a month and his class includes first aid, CPR and Narcan training. Narcan is a prescription nasal spray for the emergency treatment of an opioid overdose. Narcan counteracts the life-threatening effects of an overdose by blocking the opioid receptors—but it is important to administer it properly. That’s where Patton comes in.

Patton’s special brand of humor about a normally very serious subject is a great fit for recovering addicts, a population with which he is passionate about working. He believes that while life saving interventions are important for anyone, they are especially vital for those in recovery. This is because, unfortunately, addicts run a higher risk of cardiac arrest and are more likely to be in a situation where first aid interventions are necessary.

Patton shares, “The fact is, pre-hospital CPR and Narcan administration save lives. Period. Without people on the streets performing CPR, the chances of surviving an opiate overdose are less than five percent. It is often up to the clients and the recovery facilities to save lives.”

Patton is a big advocate of Narcan training and thinks it’s an excellent addition to a well-rounded, realistic treatment program. His philosophy is that recovering opiate addicts don’t want to overdose or necessarily have a desire to die—it’s just the nature of the disease. Unfortunately, relapse is often a part of getting clean, but the consequences of an opioid relapse just happen to be a lot more sudden and apparent than those of other diseases like heart disease or diabetes. If an addict can survive an overdose, they will have another chance at life and recovery. That’s why Narcan training and CPR are valuable skills to learn in rehab.

Patton particularly likes working with the guys at Rally Point. He talks about what sets Rally Point apart from other rehabs in the South Florida recovery world. “Rally Point is focused on the treatment of the client and not the profit. I have worked with many facilities and it is rare to see one that holds a low census on purpose so they can make treatment much more focused on the individual.”

Rally Point offers its guys the best possible start in recovery. This has nothing to do with flash or luxury, although the accommodations are upscale and comfortable. This facility is different because they make a commitment to provide each client highly individualized care and life skills. With this level of support, an intimate setting and the help of a team of committed professionals, Rally Point clients truly get a treatment experience that teaches them to survive and thrive!
