The Basics

Founded in 2001, Palouse Recovery Center (PRC) offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for those struggling with drug and alcohol abuse in Pullman, Washington. The program provides a strong 12-step emphasis but no dual diagnosis treatment or detox.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment starts with a thorough evaluation. Clients meet with counselors to design individualized treatment plans. For those who aren’t ready to commit to an evaluation, counselors at Palouse will speak to them informally to see if they’re interested in pursuing treatment, or if they need treatment at all.

The program consists of both individual and group therapy. Individual sessions with counselors take place once a week or more, depending on the client’s treatment plan. Groups focus on the 12 steps, but there are also education groups where topics include constructive coping skills, stress management, anger management and relapse prevention. Group sizes are limited to no more than 12, although most groups are smaller.

IOP sessions are held Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Each session is divided into two groups. Guest speakers from 12-step meetings make weekly visits to the group. In addition, clients are required to attend off-site 12-step meetings.

Staff members are LACDs. The staff to client ratio is roughly one-to-five. Though there are no psychiatrists on staff, the facility is located in an office building that has psychologists and referrals are made when needed

Extras

Aftercare, which meets once a week for an hour-and-a-half and can also include individual counseling sessions if the client needs them, follows IOP and outpatient treatment.

An 18-hour family program is part of the IOP program, which is held one weekend on Friday evenings, all-day Saturdays and Sunday mornings. Both clients and clients’ family members and significant others attend the programming. The programming focuses on educating family members about addiction and alcoholism.

Palouse offers DUI assessments and evaluations as well as Deferred Prosecution Evaluations for those who have been referred to treatment from the court system. In addition, Palouse can work with students from Washington State University who have been referred to treatment from the Office of Student Conduct.

Throughout the year there is an Alcohol and Drug Information educational course that’s held at Palouse center, which is recognized by the State of Washington.

In Summary

For those seeking outpatient treatment that provides  behavioral therapy as well as a 12-step emphasis, Palouse Recovery is a good option. It’s an especially solid choice for those who want to continue working or going to school.
