Oxford ValorianThe Basics

Oxford House Valorian is a sober living facility for newly sober adult women. Valorian House is one of six Oxford sober living homes for women in Delaware. Located in Newark—halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore—the Valorian House offers a drug-free, democratic and semi-structured living environment for women in Delaware.

Accommodations and Amenities

Valorian House is situated between single family homes and apartment buildings in a quiet residential neighborhood. The pleasant two story dwelling has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a small living room downstairs, upstairs sitting area, and two kitchens—one downstairs with all new appliances, and a smaller utilitarian kitchen upstairs.

The house accommodates six women in three single-occupancy rooms upstairs, one with a private bathroom and one large bedroom which sleeps three downstairs. Each bedroom has its own TV with cable. Wi-Fi and a land-line phone are included in the rent. Residents are responsible for their own food and personal items. On-site laundry facilities are available and each women is assigned a laundry day.

Rules and Regulations

Women must be at least 18 years of age, have 30 days sober and be gainfully employed. Interviews and applications are accepted on Sundays between the hours of 1 and 4 pm. All residents must unanimously agree before a new client is admitted into the house. Women can expect random urinalysis testing and room searches. Monday nights is a mandatory house meeting facilitated by the democratically elected house president.

All residents are on probation upon admission. Those who have completed a treatment program prior to entering the house are on probation for 30 days and for all others the duration is 60 days. All new residents on probation must attend five AA/NA meetings per week and house slips must be signed by the meeting secretary as proof of attendance. All women must have a sponsor within her first week of entering the house.

Upon completion of the probationary period, clients are considered official Oxford House members. House chores are assigned and rotate weekly. Curfew is at 11 pm for all residents in the first 60 days and midnight after probationary period.

In Summary

The Valorian House provides sober living for women who are newly sober or fresh out of treatment who need additional support. While the Valorian House is democratically operated, it does insist on attendance at 12-step meetings. This is a good choice for women seeking support while they develop autonomy and independence in their new drug and alcohol free lives.
