coolspringThe Basics

Oxford House Coolspring is one of 64 Oxford houses in the state of Delaware and one of thousands in the international network of transitional homes under the Oxford House umbrella. The Coolspring house is a gender-specific sober living home for men located in the rural town of Lewes, where  Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Situated next door to Cape Henlopen State Park—a nature preserve with miles of beaches, nature trails and bird sanctuaries—Lewes allows easy access to 12-step meetings, church, museums and eateries.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Coolspring house is situated on a large open lot surrounded by farmland and corn fields. The single-story ranch house accommodates six men—18 years or older—in three single-occupancy bedrooms and one double. Residents share two and a half bathrooms, a living room, a fully-equipped kitchen and on-site laundry room.

The home is fully furnished and bedrooms have twin beds, nightstands and large closets. Cable TV and Wi-Fi are included, as is the house phone—available for local calls only. There is also a backyard with a built-in grill for barbecues. Residents must provide their own food, linens and laundry soap and rent is due weekly.

Rules and Regulations

The first step in obtaining residency is a meeting with the house president, who, according to Oxford House guidelines, is elected by the house members. If the president approves, another meeting is set up for the potential client to meet the other residents. Per Oxford House tradition, all Coolspring house residents are admitted only with unanimous support from the current clients.

Residents must be sober at least 60 days (30 days if just out of treatment), show proof of employment and be involved in AA/NA and actively working with a sponsor. Any residents who are not employed but receiving disability or unemployment benefits must be out of the house between 10 am and 4 pm daily—either attending meetings, seeking employment or performing volunteer work.

The first 30 days is considered a probationary period and residents are required to attend four AA or NA meetings per week with house slips signed by the meeting secretary. After 30 days, clients are on the honor system when it comes to meeting attendance.

Curfew is 11 pm Sunday through Thursday and midnight on the weekends. After 30 days, curfew moves to 1 am seven days per week. There is a mandatory house meeting facilitated by the president on Thursday evenings at 10 pm where all house matters are discussed and rent is collected. Random urine tests are conducted and any positive tests result in immediate expulsion from the house. There is no smoking in the house and any form of violence or theft is not tolerated. Coolspring also participates in a monthly Oxford House gathering, where members from Oxford facilities within a 25-mile radius get together for fellowship.

In Summary

The Coolspring house provides sober living for adult men in a charming coastal Delaware town. With little supervision, Coolspring is ideal for individuals who are committed to recovery and seeking affordable living in a sober environment.
