The Basics
Oxford House Columbus Park is one of many sober living facilities that operate under the Oxford House umbrella. Located in a residential district in the Columbus Park section of Omaha, it has been offering low-cost sober housing for men in Douglas County, Nebraska since 2002.
Accommodations and Amenities
OHCP has four double-occupancy bedrooms, two shared bathrooms, a living room, kitchen and dining area. Laundry facilities are adjacent to the kitchen. Rent includes cable, Wi-Fi, laundry and cleaning supplies. The kitchen has a double-door refrigerator, microwave and stove and is stocked with cookware, plates and utensils. Residents are responsible for their own food, linens and personal items. The house accommodates eight men and furnishings include twin beds, nightstands and a shared dresser.
Rules and Regulations
All potential residents must have at least six months clean and sober and be gainfully employed. There is a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse, stealing and violence of any kind. Per Oxford House guidelines, the house manager is elected by the residents and serves a six-month term. All incoming clients must be screened by the manager prior to admission. After the initial interview, the residents must unanimously approve the new client.
In order to keep costs low, OHCP does not conduct drug testing, nor is there a paid staff member to enforce house rules—rather, the house manager facilitates any in-house gatherings and oversees and assigns cleaning duties. Each client is responsible for keeping their personal space clean and tidy while cleaning the common areas is a group effort.
While Oxford House was originally founded by a sober member of AA, there are no hard rules as to whether a resident attends 12-step meetings. Men are accountable to each other and their personal commitment to sobriety. Rent is due on the first of each month and non-payment is grounds for eviction.
In Summary
OHCP offers affordable sober living for men who are well on the road to recovery but who may not be ready to live on their own. As part of the national network of Oxford House sober living homes, it is a good choice for individuals who are secure in their sobriety and who are ready for autonomy, but want to remain immersed in a sober community.
