Otter House West Review
Otter House Recovery is a men’s only transitional sober living program with the main facility located in Fairview, North Carolina. In addition to the initial sober living house, Otter House recently opened up a step down facility in the heart of Asheville, known as Otter House West. This program, like the primary track, is based on the principles of the 12 steps, and provides the residents with a safe and upscale home with structure and accountability. This house still requires adherence to the house rules and guidelines of the program with less supervision and more of an emphasis on learning how to live independently while maintaining recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
The large, five bedroom single family home is located in the historic neighborhood of Montfort. The facility is conveniently located close to transportation and grocery stores, restaurants, shops and more within walking distance. The house is entirely furnished and the bedrooms are all double occupancy with full beds and dressers. The newly renovated kitchen has all necessary utensils and cookware.
The facility has several common areas including living rooms with TV and wifi, a dining room, laundry room and outside fire pit.
All utilities are provided for by the program, and there is a full time house manager who lives on the premises as well.
Rules and Regulations
House residents have to be awake and out of the house by 9:00am Monday through Friday, and complete their daily house chores. If the chores are not completed in a timely manner then privileges are either reduced or chores are added.
Clients are required to attend four AA, NA or CA meetings per week, with one of them being gender-specific.
There are no women allowed on the property unless the house manager is home, and there is zero tolerance for having females in the bedrooms. Clients who live in the house for a period of time are able to request overnight passes. There are at least three random drug screenings every week, and if a client fails the test they are immediately dismissed from the house.
Residents have to be enrolled in school full time or have a full time job. There is assistance by staff if clients have trouble finding employment. Clients are also encouraged to volunteer within the community when possible, and are required to attend the weekly house meeting.
Extras
Otter House is a pet friendly program that allows clients to bring their pets with them to the facilities, though clients are required to take responsibility for their pets at all times.
In Summary
Otter House West is an upscale facility that is a step down program from the primary sober living program that Otter House Recovery operates in Fairview, with the main difference between the programs being that there are a few less amenities provided to residents. While in this level of the program clients continue to work on their recovery with guidance from staff. At this point they are putting their life skills to work and beginning their journey of transitioning to living completely independently.
