Green Bay WisconsinThe Basics

The Oneida Tribe of American Indians has been inhabiting northern territories in Wisconsin for centuries, and after years of territorial debate, the Oneida Tribe was recognized as a sovereign nation after the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in 1988. In 1991, the Oneida Tribe entered into an agreement with the US Government that enabled them to fully inhabit their lands at which time they began to offer health services to tribal members.

The Behavioral Health Kanihukli-yo Family Center is a licensed facility offering a wide range of services in Green Bay, Wisconsin. BHK Family Center is centrally located and with substance abuse on the rise in the communities, the facility provides much needed outpatient services that combine traditional evidence-based practices and holistic treatment.

Treatment and Staff

The BHK Family Center outpatient treatment for addiction is culturally-sensitive and individualized to each client’s needs. Holistic methods are available to help individuals, couples and families move past their dependencies on alcohol, drugs, tobacco and other process addictions. Prior to admission, all clients are screened and assessed by intake staff. If a client requires detox, they are enrolled in a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program before they begin primary treatment. Suboxone and Vivitrol are prescribed and monitored by qualified mental health professionals.

Clients attend a combination of group and individual therapy to assist them in their recovery. All therapeutic activities are facilitated by CSACs, many of whom may also be Master’s-level CSWs. Therapy and psycho-educational classes are attended as well as workshops that include nutrition, family relationships, spirituality, mindfulness, tribal traditions and relapse prevention. Clients are also encouraged to attend both 12-step and White Bison meetings that bring together the tribal community.

Clients with co-occurring disorders are provided medication management and therapeutic dual diagnosis support as well as additional activities that connect them to the local community and traditions. A total of seven mental health professionals work under the substance abuse program with an equal mix of female and male counselors. The facility also works with the Brown County Crisis Center in the event that clients are in need of after-hours care or are in crisis.

Extras

The BHK Family Center also offers additional counseling services for couples and family members in need. The facility recommends the participation of loved ones and spouses to support recovery at home and following discharge.

In Summary

With opioid addiction on the rise in the area, The BHK Family Center provides reliable treatment that is culturally sensitive. Through individual and group therapy as well as family and couple’s services, clients can excel in their recovery process with an emphasis on tribal connectivity and customs. Through funding and resources, services can be compensated for making recovery accessible for all.
