The Basics

Oliver-Pyatt Centers offers residential and outpatient treatment for women with eating disorders in Miami, Florida. Its treatment philosophy focuses on intuitive eating “and the belief that each person has the capacity for a mindful relationship with food and their body.” Oliver-Pyatt’s treatment team takes a patient-centric approach that uses empathy, wisdom and medical well-being to ground clients in life-long recovery. Its outpatient offerings include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

The Centers were founded in 2008 by Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, a Fellow of the Academy of Eating Disorders and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. She is the author of Fed Up! The Breakthrough Ten Step No Diet Fitness Plan, featured in Family Circle and Psychology Today. Dr. Oliver-Pyatt has held positions as an assistant professor of psychiatry at several colleges and universities and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals and the Binge Eating Disorder Association.

Treatment and Staff

Clients have a full bio-psycho-social assessment upon entering treatment. PHP clients attend treatment from 9 am to 8 pm each week day. IOP who are alumni of Oliver-Pyatt’s residential program may attend daytime; evening groups are available for women initially enrolling in the outpatient program. IOP clients usually attend treatment three to four times each week. The length of treatment is progress-based, though most clients continue for at least one month. Oliver-Pyatt has utilization specialists on staff to ensure that clients are getting the maximum benefits and length of treatment afforded by their insurance.

Clients have processing groups after eating in which to work through the feelings they had at mealtime. They also have nutrition classes. Therapy uses CBT, DBT, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). Oliver-Pyatt is known for having clinicians especially effective in the treatment of trauma related to eating disorders. PHP clients have individual therapy at least three times a week. IOP clients have weekly individual therapy and may receive coordinated care if they are already in treatment with an outside psychiatrist or therapist.

The program also helps clients reintegrate into independent living by engaging them in exposure therapy activities, such as off-site social events and recreational outings, so that clients can learn to manage likely food and appetite triggers with the support of their eating coaches. Dieticians and coaches also take clients on supported grocery shopping trips.

The treatment team at Oliver-Pyatt includes three psychiatrists, LMHCs, MSWs, registered dieticians, psychologists, food coaches and medical doctors. Therapists usually only work with three clients at a time, ensuring much individual attention and customized aftercare planning. Oliver-Pyatt’s treatment team has considerable expertise in treatment co-occurring disorders. It can provide referrals to 12-step or other peer support programs and therapists for the treatment of significant mental health diagnoses and/or substance abuse.

Extras

Oliver-Pyatt incorporates family support in the form of family therapy and education groups. There is also a monthly “Family Friday,” a day of support and education groups and therapy sessions for clients and their families.

The treatment team works with each client to create a successful aftercare plan that may include on-going group, individual and/or family therapy.
