Portland OregonThe Basics

Founded in 1887, the Oregon Health and Science University offers the people of Portland with a variety of health care services. The OHSU Avel Gordly Center for Healing specializes in helping individuals with behavioral health issues. Substance abuse treatment at Avel Gordly is offered on an outpatient basis and geared towards clients who have already received primary care. Services are designed to serve the city’s diverse population and be culturally sensitive towards specific issues facing African American and/or LGBTQ people.

Treatment and Staff

Initially, all potential clients undergo a two-hour assessment with a professional intake coordinator. This assessment costs $529 and will provide clients with an accurate treatment approach. If during the initial assessment, an individual is recommended medication, it can be prescribed and monitored by a staff psychiatrist. CBT is utilized for all therapy sessions. The treatment approach is applicable for individuals suffering from co-occurring disorders, including moderate to acute depression, PTSD and anxiety disorders. As all services at OHSU are considered secondary treatment, no detox services are provided, but referrals can be provided if needed.

Because the facility is recommended as an aftercare service, most clients will attend individual therapy once a week. Some group therapy sessions may be recommended, but typically at a frequency of once per month. If clients would like to participate in couples or family therapy, the sessions can be arranged at the discretion of the therapist. There is no minimum or maximum length of treatment, since all clients receive an individualized treatment plan based on their own progress and goals.

All therapy sessions are handled by an established team of four psychiatrists, five psychologists including LPCs, LCSWs and PhDs. Two CSACs are also on staff, all of which employ evidence-based treatment methods for their clients.

Extras

The OHSU Avel Gordly Center for Healing offers a special treatment program for employees of the University. These clients can either be employees or family members of the employee. Clients under this category are able to have priority space in this limited program to expedite the waiting process.

In addition, the program offers specialized treatment and groups for clients who are adopted, adoptees, African American or identifying as LGBTQ. All staff members receive special training that enables them to effectively treat these demographics.

In Summary

The OHSU Avel Gordly Center for Healing is a niche treatment facility for those transitioning out of primary treatment. Clients can expect to receive focused individual therapy from the highly-trained staff. One therapy session per week plus an occasional group or family session is suitable for clients that are in an aftercare phase of treatment or sober living situation. With dual-diagnosis support and specialized groups for members of the African American and LGBTQ communities, this outpatient facility is an asset to Portland.
