Oceanside CoastalThe Basics

Oceanside Coastal Sober Living is a custom-built two-story home half a mile away from the beach in Oceanside, California—not too a shabby a place to get sober. The house was once women-only, but recently began housing both men and women. This sober living is a self-managed, democratic community where clients adhere to self-imposed structure and rules for harmonious living. The owner, a former MFT, serves as the house manager. Oceanside provides an open environment for clients to practice transitioning back to their lives while incorporating new, healthy standards of living.

Accommodation and Amenities

Oceanside Coastal is a lovely beachfront home—a two story with Spanish tile roofing and sweeping coastal views. There are five bedrooms, with nine beds total and three baths. The house includes a Master bedroom with its own bathroom and Jacuzzi. The four other fully-furnished bedrooms have two full beds in each. Residents enjoy TV, Wi-Fi and a full library filled with computers and books on health and healing. Two fireplaces in common areas provide ambience.

On the second-story patio there’s also space for clients to barbeque and socialize. Meals are often prepared with ingredients from the orchard in the back of the property; all prepared meals are made with raw, organic foods. Staff oversee meal preparation and choose menu items. Clients can team up to prepare meals but all are free to cook independently. Tidying up after oneself is expected, and clients do their own laundry with an onsite washer and dryer.

Rules and Regulations

There is no term limit at Oceanside Coastal, clients may stay a few weeks or over a year. The essential ground rule is that clients must remain abstinent from drugs and alcohol and participate in their recovery by attending 12-step meetings or other support groups. Oceanside Coastal does not host its own 12-step meetings, so clients attend these off-site. Individuals who opt to work a 12-step program must have a sponsor and attend meetings weekly. Other support group meetings like Celebrate Recovery and SMART Recovery are also available close by. The owner of Oceanside Coastal makes herself available to clients and with a background in trauma-informed therapy, she can be a good resource for clients if they need support in recovery.

Clients must pay a $100 fee for drug tests, provide first’s month’s rent and two personal references prior to moving in. Clients must be able to live in a group and maintain cleanliness. Curfew is 10pm Sunday through Thursday, 11pm Friday and Saturday. If there are sober functions or family events at night, clients are permitted to stay out later than curfew so long as activities are pre-approved.

Extras

Membership to a local gym is included in the cost of living.

In Summary

Oceanside Coastal Sober Living is a safe, clean environment for clients who need a brief respite or a more long-term living situation in early recovery. The house manager is a strong on-site resource who brings a professional therapeutic background to clients. She is particularly diligent about keeping the environment safe, using only organic cleaning products in the house. With a secure, comfortable and relaxing home, minutes away from the beach, clients have the opportunity to recover at their own pace, in peace.
