The Basics
With two locations in Makawao, Hawaii about five miles north of Maui, Nova Luna Center is a CARF-accredited behavioral health organization offering flexible outpatient-based programs for clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. The facility is the first of its kind on the Hawaiian islands and approaches eating disorders from a variety of different therapeutic perspectives.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all participants undergo a thorough intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs and their medical history. While inpatient detox or medical stabilization services are not provided on-site, those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities. The main program is a Day Treatment option, which is more intensive than a typical Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) but with more flexibility than residential care.
Once accepted, individuals can begin attending treatment that includes individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. All clients also work with on-staff dietitians to develop healthy eating plans and to face any food-related fears they may have through exposure therapy. Other methods include holistic methods such as expressive art therapy and Somatic Experiencing. Dual diagnosis support is available as well. While 12-step participation is not strictly required, it may be encouraged in some cases.
The staff at Nova Luna Center consists of MDs, LCSWs, nutritionists, LMFTs, hypnotherapists and additional Master’s-level therapists.
Extras
Other special services include the option for equine therapy and acupuncture in addition to all the above. As mentioned, all programs are flexible and include flexible discharge and aftercare planning whenever necessary.
