The Basics
North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center was founded in 1953 in Westbury, New York as a non-profit children’s mental health agency. Today, the organization provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to children and adolescents as well as support for young people who have family members struggling with addiction.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment consists of individual and group therapy, with groups offered in the afternoons and evenings to accommodate academic schedules. Those in need of a more intense level of care are referred to outside residential treatment and/or detox.
North Shore is a highly individualized program so the length and intensity of treatment is based on the needs of each client. While the environment is set up to establish a system of peer support, counselors still aim to address individual needs in group sessions, using education, sharing, relapse prevention and CBT. Individual therapy is scheduled as needed.
Although North Shore is not 12-step based, counselors still refer adolescent clients to outside AA and NA meetings. North Shore is equipped to treat clients with a dual diagnosis and has psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health counselors on staff. It also offers medication management.
Staff consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs and CASACs.
Extras
North Shore offers a family program that consists of both multi-family groups and individual sessions with the client, their family and a counselor. These meetings are arranged upon client’s request.
The organization also provides early childhood, bereavement, trauma and community education services, in addition to facilitating special prevention groups for adolescents at local high schools.
