With locations in Toronto and Thornhill in Ontario, Canada, New Realities Eating Disorders Recovery Centre is a behavioral health organization founded in 1996. It offers flexible outpatient-based treatment programs for clients struggling with food issues and co-occurring mental health disorders. Treatment plans are individualized and include support for a range of different eating disorders including binge eating, compulsive overeating, bulimia and anorexia. Treatment programs are open to men, women, adolescents and adults alike.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their care plans. Although on-site detox services are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby facilities as necessary. The organization also offers more flexible online therapy, but most clients start by attending the individual intensive program, which is akin to an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The program meets for two to four hours of therapy a day, three or four days a week, for a duration of one to three weeks.
While the specifics of each program may vary, all clients can expect to attend both individual and group therapy. Therapy sessions are rooted in Adlerian psychology and experiential therapy including art therapy, psychodrama, guided imagery, meditation, dance and movement therapy. Group sessions cover many topics including healthy body image, self-esteem, coping skills, stress management and self-care. Though some basic support is provided for issues like depression and anxiety, those seeking more intensive dual diagnosis or psychiatric support may need to seek additional help elsewhere. Twelve-step participation is not required.
The staff at New Realities Eating Disorders Recovery Centre consists of registered psychotherapists, holistic counselors and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Other services include family and marital therapy in addition to standalone psychological assessments. LGBTQ-sensitive therapy is also offered. Additionally, those who complete a primary care regimen can work with staff members to develop aftercare plans as necessary.
The organization also sells a set of guided meditations by founder and psychotherapist Patricia Kelly, all of which are available on CD or by digital download. Certified clinical training for those looking to treat eating disorders in their own practices is also available.
Overall, New Realities Eating Disorders Recovery Centre is a well-rounded organization which offers flexible and individualized care for men and women of all ages who are struggling with eating disorders. Treatment includes psychotherapy as well as a host of experiential and holistic groups to get clients more in touch with their bodies and emotions. While those in need of more intensive psychiatric support may need to look for help elsewhere, New Realities Eating Disorders Recovery Centre is a strong resource for those in the Toronto area.
