The Basics
Founded in 1990, New Oakland Family Centers is a multi-faceted mental and behavioral health organization with locations throughout Southeast Michigan. Among its services is outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for children, adolescents and adults struggling with mental, behavioral and/or chemical abuse issues, including co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients work with staff members to develop an individualized treatment plan that follows either a standard or intensive track, which includes New Oakland’s unique short-term intensive program called FACE to FACE. Similar to an IOP in daily treatment hours but much shorter in duration, FACE to FACE uses an interventionist approach that typically lasts only three to seven days. However, all programs work within the structure of individual, group and family therapy and use a variety of evidence-based practices, such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
While the standard outpatient program meets anywhere from once a week to once a month, the IOP meets three times a week for three hours at a time. While 12-step participation is not always a requirement, all clients are encouraged to attend meetings if they wish.
Staff consists of LPCs, LMSWs, MDs, psychiatrists, psychologists and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Additional services include 24-hour crisis stabilization services as an alternative for clients facing potential psychiatric hospitalization. New Oakland also offers standalone mental health counseling, ADD/ADHD assessments for children and additional psychological testing as needed.

Treatment employs different approaches and evidence-based practices with added support for clients with a dual diagnosis. While those in need of more intensive residential treatment or in search of 12-step integration will need to look elsewhere, New Oakland Family Centers remains a valuable resource to Southeast Michigan residents at a number of convenient locations.
