The Basics
New Horizons Recovery Center, an outpatient recovery program for adults with substance abuse issues, is part of WellStone Behavioral Health and primarily serves northern Alabama residents. Founded in 1980, New Horizons has served the community for decades through a state-funded facility in Huntsville. It gives priority admission to individuals with a history of intravenous substance abuse, to pregnant women and to females with dependents.
Treatment and Staff
New Horizons follows a 12-week outpatient treatment schedule that includes group therapy, individual therapy and homework assignments, using a state-certified curriculum. Clients take an initial assessment before starting the program to see what specific care is required.
Group therapy is the primary method of treatment at New Horizons. If a client is uncomfortable in group, individual therapy is available with both male and female counselors to choose from. Clients attend group or individual sessions between one and three times per week. Group sessions are two and a half hours each and the group size may range anywhere from eight to 25 people. Each session is run by a Master’s-level clinician, some of whom are LCSWs while others are LPCs. Group sessions are offered both in the morning hours between 9 pm and noon and in the evening between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm to accommodate all schedules.
New Horizons is not 12-step oriented, which leaves participation in AA or NA entirely up to the individual.

New Horizons accepts Medicaid. The initial assessment is only $60 and each session, either group or individual, is $20.
