The Basics

Located about 10 miles north of central Minneapolis in Columbia Heights, New Heights Sober House is a sober living facility that provides a structured abstinence-based environment for male and female clients beginning their recovery journey. Situated minutes away from restaurants, coffee shops, parks and the Mississippi River, New Heights Sober House is centrally located in a vibrant part of the city. With easy access to plenty of public transport and numerous 12-step meetings, the the residence offers everything clients need to focus on recovery. New Heights was founded and is currently owned by Greg McFarlane, a former musician that toured for 35 years, in order to create the safe haven he wished he’d had in early sobriety.

Accommodations and Amenities

The goal of New Heights is to provide a safe, sober and comfortable environment that fosters an atmosphere of joyous, clean living. The home offers residents an energetic social life while maintaining a structured day to day lifestyle where individuals are held accountable. The New Heights team encourages residents to socialize and support one another during regular house meetings and activities.

While New Heights has three homes, and a total of 34 beds, located in the Twin Cities area, the 5th Street house in Columbia Heights is the oldest and largest; it’s a 6,000 square foot home equipped with 25 beds, two kitchens, dining areas, living rooms and four bathrooms. There are private and shared bedrooms available, all of which are fully furnished and sport flat screen TVs, dressers and a desk. Clients enjoy plenty of amenities including several common areas with leather couches and TVs, a music room complete with drums and guitars, spacious floor plans, lots of natural lighting, an on-site laundry and free WiFi. There is also off-street parking and easy access to bus lines.

Rules and Regulations

While New Heights promotes a fun-loving atmosphere and personal freedom, residents must commit to living in a structured setting where decisions are made democratically. Clients cannot begin living at New Heights unless they have maintained 30 consecutive days of sobriety and can commit to 20 plus hours a week of employment or volunteer work. In addition, clients must attend at least three 12-step support meetings per week, work with a 12-step sponsor and help with cooking and chores. While each house has a housing manager, residents are expected to hold themselves as well as their peers accountable for following house rules.

Clients participate in regular activities, house meetings and are expected to attend at least three 12-step support meetings a week as well as 20 hours a week of working or volunteering.
