Valley Healthcare Systems New BeginningsThe Basics

New Beginnings is the sober living home for women ages 18 and over offered through Valley Healthcare Systems in Fairmont, West Virginia. With residential and outpatient tracks for adults and adolescents, Valley Healthcare has been providing women in recovery from substance abuse with treatment and transitional care since 1997.

Accommodations and Amenities

New Beginnings is a two-story house on a quiet residential street surrounded by other single-family homes. There are four double-occupancy bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, kitchen and laundry room. All rooms are furnished with twin beds, night stands and a shared dresser. Food, cleaning supplies and linens are provided. While the house manager does the grocery shopping, clients are responsible for preparing meals. There is a TV in the living room with viewing hours in the evenings following dinner and before meetings.

Rules and Regulations

New Beginnings requires a six-month commitment and all potential clients must be sober upon admission—both drug and alcohol screenings are administered to ensure sobriety. Cell phones and laptops are prohibited. Smoking is permitted outside only during designated breaks. Substance abuse, stealing and violence are grounds for eviction.

After 60 days, residents may use the house manager’s computer for job search purposes. The women are responsible for cleaning up after themselves as well as house chores assigned by the manager. For the first 90 days, the women attend daily CBT-oriented group sessions Monday through Friday and one weekly individual session facilitated by a Master’s-level therapist.

The daily schedule starts with breakfast at 8 am followed by morning clean up and the first group meeting at 10 am. After lunch, there are two more groups with topics including self-esteem, addiction studies and relapse prevention. After the evening meal, clients attend a local community AA meeting Monday through Saturday evenings. Saturday is house cleaning from 9 am until 11:30 am, followed by lunch and then free time. Visiting is on Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm with free time in the evenings. An outing is scheduled every other Saturday evening, with clients accompanied by house staff.

After 90 days, residents are expected to be employed, involved in volunteer work or enrolled in school. At the discretion of staff, clients may go out on weekend passes and attend outside 12-step meetings with their sponsor or a sober buddy.

In Summary

New Beginnings provides a very structured and therapeutic sober living home for adult women, using the 12-step recovery program.  With a six-month commitment and the added benefit of therapy, the facility is a good fit for those who need extra support transitioning into daily life after residential or outpatient treatment.
