Madison TennesseeA New Attitude Housing Review

Founded in 2014 in the Nashville suburb of Madison, Tennessee, A New Attitude Housing is a non-profit organization that provides sober living for men, including criminal justice clients. Their mission is to provide safe and structured housing so that clients can acclimate successfully back into society, while learning accountability and working on building a strong foundation in recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

A New Attitude Housing is a quaint split-level style house that has a large front porch with Greek columns. Eight clients are accommodated in comfortably furnished, double-occupancy rooms. There is a food pantry, which is fully stocked. Some clients qualify for food stamp benefits, which assist towards the purchase of groceries. Meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen.

The house is located in on a bus line, and is in close proximity to shopping, employment opportunities, churches, and 12-step meetings. Bus passes are available for clients to assist them with job searches, as well as helping them get to medical and mental health appointments. A house manager lives on the premises, and oversees operations. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only.

Rules and Regulations

At A New Attitude Housing, residents must have undergone detox. Prior to admission, men undergo comprehensive assessments. While a majority of residents hail from the criminal justice system, violent offenders, arsonists and sex offenders are not admitted. The minimum length of stay is three months. Clients must find employment and are provided with vocational guidance and support. Those on SSI must be receiving disability benefits prior to arriving at the facility. SSI clients are encouraged to participate in community service.

Requirements include attending five weekly 12-step meetings, both on and off the premises, acquiring and actively working with a sponsor and completing daily household chores. Some clients attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), per their aftercare protocol. Other services besides housing include case management, participating in an Alcohol and Drug treatment program, life skills coaching and vocational guidance. The state-funded Alcohol and Drug education program is for DUI clients, and provides substance abuse education, group therapy and case management. An off-site state-licensed provider provides treatment services.

At A New Attitude Housing, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. The house has a zero tolerance policy. Residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately to ensure the safety of the entire household. The curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

A New Attitude Housing relies on volunteers to help with recreational activities, to act as sponsors, and assist with grant writing.

In Summary

A New Attitude Housing really goes all out to help clients, specifically criminal justice clients, learn how to rebuild their lives, while establishing a strong 12-step based protocol. This is a great choice for men who are transitioning from incarceration and sincerely seeking to rebuild their lives.
