Native American for Community Action, Inc. (NACA) was founded in 1971 in Flagstaff, Arizona. The organization is located in the Cedar Safeway Plaza and has a variety of both mental and behavioral health programs, in an outpatient setting and available adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

NACA’s intake process is exceptionally quick and consists of a short, in-person meeting with one of the organization’s counselors. Although the organization is based around Native American values, NACA accepts and welcomes individuals of all backgrounds to attend. If the client is of Native American decent, the program is free of cost, and for other clients NACA operates on a sliding scale. NACA refers clients in need of more extensive treatment to outside residential or detox facilities.

The length of NACA’s program is based on the counselor’s assessment of the client’s needs but the treatment includes both group and individual counseling. NACA aims to keep groups small and has an average of 10 clients per group. Counselors implement myriad techniques including CBT, relapse prevention and the Matrix Model. NACA also offers weekly healing groups centered specifically on the needs of the Native American community.

Counselors also implement 12-step principles and encourage clients to attend outside AA and NA meetings while in treatment.

The organization is dual diagnosis and offers individual meetings with mental health counselors for clients with co-occurring disorders. Clients with co-occurring disorders are also referred to the network’s mental health department for further treatment.

The organization’s substance abuse counselors consist of a mixture of LPCs, LADCs, MSWs and LACs. NACA also has an extensive number of mental health counselors on staff.

Extras

NACA also facilitates a number of court-ordered programs including a DUI program.

In Summary

Native Americans for Community Action, Inc. boasts a lot of assets. The high number of mental health counselors as well as the access to the nearby medical center provides a necessary level of support to clients with co-occurring disorders. NACA’s introduction and integration of the 12 steps into the treatment allows men and women to become familiar with this sort of approach to recovery before transitioning to outside AA and NA meetings. Also, the weekly healing group offers an alternative to western treatment for clients with a Native American background.
