Located in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Muskogee County Council of Youth Services serves the local community with substance abuse and mental health treatment for adolescents. Created in 1973, this state-funded outpatient based facility offers sliding fee scales for those with financial difficulties. Rooted in the 12 steps, the programs provide youth with structured care and therapeutic support. Through a mixture of individual, family and group therapy, clients can learn how to live a sober life.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, clients undergo an initial evaluation to determine the type of care needed. While services for substance abuse are available on an outpatient basis only, referrals can be made for those who need residential treatment or detox.

Recovery at Muskogee County Council is rooted in the philosophies of the 12 steps. The Substance Abuse Services Program provides a variety of counseling and education services, as well as evaluations and assessments focusing on alcohol or drug issues. Group, family and individual therapy is available. Group topics include relapse prevention, communication, coping skills and discussion of the 12 steps. Treatment is geared to enhance both family living and social skills, while gaining healthy coping tools. The length and intensity of the treatment services depend on the individual’s needs.

The staff includes LADCs and LCSWs.

Extras

Muskogee County Council also offers a range of specialty services such as Community At Risk Services, a drug court program for adults and adolescents, a first-offender program, an outreach program, foster care and a residential home for boys who have suffered trauma and abuse.

CARS is an outpatient program for youth who are in trouble with the law, while the drug court program offers court-supervised, comprehensive services for non-violent defendants with substance abuse issues. This voluntary program includes a mixture of group, individual and family therapy, as well as 12-step meetings. The four-week first-offender program targets first time juvenile offenders, covering topics such as the dangers of drugs and alcohol, anger management and conflict resolution.

The outreach program provides counseling services to families and children, specifically targeting younger children and at-risk youth to keep them out of the juvenile justice system. Services include counseling, tutoring in area public schools, anger management groups, nicotine smoking cessation groups, parenting skills, group counseling and socialization activities. Finally, the 12-bed residential program for boys aims to help them deal with their trauma and reenter the community in a healthy and empowered way.

In Summary

Muskogee County Council of Youth Services brings quality care to young people who are suffering from substance abuse. Through the 12 steps, clients are given a clear path towards sobriety. Thanks to sliding scale fees, no one is turned away due to lack of funds. With both a small staff and client load, each client receives personalized attention and focused care.
