The Basics
Munson Healthcare is a network of nine healthcare and hospital facilities in northern Michigan, headquartered in the resort city of Traverse City. Since 1976, Munson has provided outpatient and short-term inpatient substance abuse treatment. Its outpatient programs include both a standard track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Its residential program provides two weeks of treatment and housing for clients who may then step down to the facility’s outpatient program.
Accommodations and Food
Residents are housed in a unit of the hospital and have one roommate and a shared bathroom. The hospital provides all meals, which are delivered to residents’ rooms. Clients are not permitted cell phones or computers, but they may use the unit phones to call home.
The facility provides ample recreational activities for residents well enough to participate, including daily walks, yoga and movie showings.
Treatment and Staff
Inpatient clients attend several sessions of group and individual therapy each day. IOP clients attend group therapy three times each week for three-hour sessions and have one-on-one sessions once a week. Standard outpatient clients attend group therapy twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed.
The cornerstone modality of therapy is CBT and gender-specific groups are prescribed for some clients. Therapists also use the 12-step framework and the inpatient clients attend daily on-site 12-step meetings. IOP clients are also required to attend two 12-step meetings each week.
Therapy groups have an average of 12 participants and are facilitated by Master’s-level therapists with addiction counseling credentials. The treatment team includes MSWs, MFTs, CADCs and LPCs. Munson staff are qualified to treat clients with co-occurring disorders, though clients who require psychiatric medication are referred to Munson’s behavioral health department or a community mental health clinic.
Extras
Munson hosts a family group for family members of clients each Tuesday night. Inpatient clients can receive family visitors on Sundays and periodically the inpatient program hosts a Wednesday Family Day of classes and workshops for families to learn more addiction and recovery.
