The Basics

Founded in 1984, Mosaic Community Services is the largest community-based behavioral health service provider in Maryland. Partners in Recovery, its substance abuse and mental health component, offers treatment for adults who struggle with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. With two outpatient facilities in Baltimore, Mosaic Community Services treats addiction using the Recovery Oriented System of Care (ROSC) approach, a philosophy that recognizes addiction as a chronic condition and supports abstinence as only the first step in the long healing process.

Treatment and Staff

Mosaic offers medically supervised outpatient treatment using Suboxone. Once approve by the staff physician, clients are seen on a daily basis by the medical staff for dosage and must be enrolled in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Initially detox clients are administered medication every weekday and given a weekend supply on Fridays. As they progress through the program, clients earn the privilege of receiving larger supplies at once. A LPN dispenses the medication.

IOP is a six to nine month program where clients meet three days a week for three hours (morning and evening sessions are available). Treatment consists of individual therapy, once a week for the first three months and then once a month thereafter, and group therapy—where topics include addiction studies, health and behavior, nutrition, stress reduction, relapse prevention and coping skills. Those with co-occurring disorders see a psychiatrist once a month and attend groups specific to their diagnosis (anxiety, depression, bipolar). Clients are subject to random drug testing and must attend three 12-step meetings a week. Proof of attendance sheets must be signed and returned to their primary counselor.

The outpatient program also utilizes individual therapy once a week and group therapy twice a week. Group topics are the same as IOP and clients are also required to attend 12-step meetings with signed attendance sheets.

The treatment team at Mosaic consists of LADCs, Master’s-level therapists, LPNs, psychiatrists and physicians. A licensed substance abuse counselor or MFT facilitates all sessions and group size is limited to 14.

Extras

Aftercare is an ongoing weekly support group that is aims to supplement involvement in 12-step groups. This is a peer driven process group and current clients and alumni are welcome. Family therapy is also available for loved ones who need support or are interested in the recovery process.

For those people in trouble with the law, there is a 12-week and a 26-week course DWI/Drug and Alcohol Education Program that meets the requirements of the Maryland court system.

In Summary

Mosaic Community Services may be a good and affordable option for those seeking for outpatient treatment and who are open to using Suboxone. While controversial, the idea behind opioid replacement therapy is to eventually ween clients off of the maintenance program and be opiate-free. While most IOPs last an average of six weeks, the six to nine month program here—along with the aftercare—makes Mosaic an attractive choice for people wanting extended supervision and accountability.
