The Basics

Men and Women for Human Excellence was founded in 2005 by Kenny Ali and Keith Johnson, who were frustrated that the selling of illegal drugs was the number one employer in their neighborhood in northeast Philadelphia. The CARF-accredited community-based center operates a robust outpatient program and an 88-bed therapeutic community for long-term treatment. Shortly after its opening, Human Excellence recognized the connection between mental health disorders and substance abuse and quickly became licensed to provide dual-diagnosis support. Human Excellence has recently opened a sister facility in Decatur, Georgia.

Treatment and Staff

After a series of assessments, most clients enter outpatient treatment at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care. IOP clients attend group therapy for three hours a day, three times a week. They also have individual therapy at least once a week. As they progress, clients may step-down to standard outpatient treatment, which usually consists of group therapy for two hours twice a week and individual therapy once a week.

The duration of treatment is progress-based, and it is not unusual for clients to stay in outpatient treatment for up to a year. Human Excellence also refers clients to its residential program or other nearby programs if a higher level of care is needed.

The multi-disciplinary treatment team includes master’s level therapists such as MSWs, psychologists, CACs, psychiatrists and peer recovery specialists. Clients with co-occurring disorders can receive medication management. Therapy uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to provide strength-based, client-focused treatment. All clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings in addition to their treatment groups.

Extras

Family therapy is available to loved ones who wish to participate in treatment. Human Excellence provides transportation services and weekend lunches to clients. Human Excellence runs the MWFHE TCE-HIV Program for Change, which helps HIV+ access medical and therapeutic services.

In Summary

Men and Women for Human Excellence has served as a source of strength and support in its northeast Philadelphia community for over a decade. It continues to evolve its programs to meet the changing needs of its community. Its comprehensive substance abuse and mental health treatment programs have helped hundreds of its neighbors lead healthy, productive lives in recovery.
