Charleston South CarolinaThe Basics

The Medical University of South Carolina’s Institute of Psychiatry provides outpatient treatment through its Center for Drug and Alcohol Program (CDAP). Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the CDAP has a variety of treatment tracks for both adolescents and adults, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a short-term detox facility which treats clients for three to seven days. The IOP has been in operation for nearly 10 years and draws on a robust treatment team that features psychiatrists and PhD-level therapists involved in researching the newest models of addiction treatment.

Treatment and Staff

CDAP assessments are available on a walk-in basis each weekday from 9 am to 12 pm and potential clients are asked to arrive no later than 11:15 am. After the assessment, clients are placed on an individualized treatment track tailored to their unique needs.

Adolescents may enter the ASSET program which offers either a prevention- or treatment-oriented track. The prevention track consists of four weekly classes on drug and alcohol addiction and typically lasts eight weeks. Treatment includes group therapy twice a week as well as individual and family therapy as-needed.

Adults placed in the four-week IOP meet for group therapy at least three times each week and individual therapy at least once each week. Both evening and daytime groups are available. Some clients may be eligible for a specialized Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) track and those struggling with opiate addiction can receive Suboxone via Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).

Group therapy uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-step framework. Attendance of AA/NA or other outside peer support meetings may be a component of each client’s treatment plan and meetings are scheduled on the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina.

The treatment team at CDAP is highly-trained and experienced in treating co-occurring disorders. Master’s and PhD-level therapists work with psychiatrists to find effective medication to treat both addiction and mental health conditions. Some clients may even choose to participate in the University’s clinical trials on addiction treatment, though that is not a requirement of receiving care at CDAP.

Extras

For aftercare, alumni of the IOP can attend a weekly relapse prevention group on Wednesdays and ‘booster’ sessions with their individual counselor. The treatment team also offers intervention services to families and employers seeking to find treatment for a loved one or colleague.

In Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina’s Institute of Psychiatry is one of the country’s leading research facilities for the treatment of addiction. Its Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs offers treatment grounded in proven techniques that combine therapy, peer support and medical intervention. The broad range and depth of available treatment options and experience of the treatment team may make the Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs an especially effective option for those whose addiction has resisted treatment in the past.
