The Basics
Located in the Baldwin Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, Medi-Cure Health Services, Inc. has been providing outpatient substance abuse treatment for over 10 years. Medi-Cure was founded by Dr. Josephine Kannike-Martin, a Registered Dietician. Dr. Kannike-Martin believes that many clients dealing with substance abuse are also suffering from nutritional deficiencies and a lack of knowledge when it comes to making healthy food choices. In addition to therapy, treatment at Medi-Cure offers clients nutrition and meal preparation classes to aid in their recovery.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that requires them to attend group therapy three to five times each week. Treatment plans last from six months to a year and clients work with their counselor to make a step down plan as they progress through treatment.
Groups have up to 12 participants and are led by addiction counselors with Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) credentials. Group topics include CBT-based coping skills, relapse prevention, anger management and addiction education. Medi-Cure also offers a group on substance abuse nutrition education and makes sure clients have access to community resources to cope with food insecurity.
Individual counseling is available as-needed and while co-occurring disorders are addressed in groups, Medi-Cure does not have therapists or psychiatrists on staff, so clients with dual diagnosis are referred to community mental health agencies for more extensive therapy and medication management. Twelve step meetings are not a requirement of treatment, but they are strongly recommended.
Extras
In addition to intensive nutrition education, Medi-Cure works with clients to make sure they have transportation to treatment. It also offers domestic violence and anger management programs and once clients have completed their outpatient treatment, they are invited to participate in aftercare in the form of a weekly relapse prevention group.
