McAlister Institute South Bay Women's Recovery CenterThe Basics

Founded in the 1980s by Jeanne McAlister, The McAlister Institute provides outpatient and residential treatment throughout California’s San Diego and Napa counties. McAlister, who recently celebrated 58 years in recovery, was awarded the Frank Goldsmith Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 by the San Diego Drug-Free Alliance and the Innovative Approaches to Recovery from the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs in 2006. In operation for over 20 years, South Bay Women’s Recovery Center (SBWRC) is located in National City, a few miles south of San Diego. SBWRC provides treatment to women and free on-site childcare and parenting classes.

Treatment and Staff

Prospective clients must first attend one of SBWRC’s weekly orientation sessions. If they then decide the program is right for them, they can schedule an assessment. After their assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that includes individual and group therapy over a course of six to nine months.

Most clients enter treatment at the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level. PHP clients attend group therapy up to five times each week, and IOP clients usually attend group therapy three times each week. Clients on both tracks have individual therapy at least every other week. Clients gradually step down to a lower intensity of treatment until they are attending group therapy once a week. This stage, referred to as aftercare or continuing care, usually lasts three to four months.

Groups usually have 12 or fewer participants. The treatment team includes CAOD addiction counselors and Master’s-level therapists including MSWs and MFTs. Therapy uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), trauma-informed care and Seeking Safety.

The treatment team is able to offer dual diagnosis support and has a dedicated group for those diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. However, if a client’s mental health disorder escalates, they’re referred to a nearby mental health clinic, to which SBWRC provides transportation.

The treatment team also encourages clients to work the 12-step framework, and clients are required to attend two AA or NA meetings each week.

Extras

SBWRC provides on-site childcare to all clients’ children. Children of clients can also receive assessments and referrals for supportive services through SBWRC’s partnership with First5 California. Family therapy is also available for loved ones who wish to take an active role in the client’s recovery.

Once clients have completed their treatment plan, they are invited to attend a weekly relapse prevention group for as long as they wish.
