The Basics
Located in Westchester County, New York in the town of Scarsdale, Metro Behavioral Health Associates (MBHA) is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with eating disorders. Founded by Jennie Kramer, MSW and author of Overcoming Binge Eating for Dummies, MBHA provides Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) and outpatient treatment services for male and female adults and adolescents ages 12 and up, with a focus on treating the underlying issues. It specializes in a range of eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive binge-eating. Medication management is also available for clients in need of dual diagnosis support.
MBHA in Scarsdale is located about 20 minutes from the Hudson River and 30 minutes north of Yonkers. The office is situated in the center of town, with metered street parking available. There is also an outpatient location in Manhattan.
Treatment and Staff
Upon intake, clients undergo both a biopsychosocial and a nutritional assessment. The assessments help the staff customize the most effective treatment plan to meet the specific needs of the client. MBHA offers an IOP program that helps clients transition from higher levels of care down to outpatient, with an average length of treatment between six and eight weeks.
IOP is divided into two groups. The first is a mixed eating disorder program that meets three times per week, and the other is a compulsive overeating program that meets twice a week. Clients participate in individual, group and family counseling sessions, with a wide range of approaches including CBT, DBT, ACT and EMDR to treat past trauma as a component of the current disorder. Hypnotherapy is also available as well as group sessions including art and music therapy, yoga, coping skills, nutritional coursework, body image and relapse prevention. For adolescent clients, the facility uses the Maudsley Method, a family-based process that includes individual sessions and a focus on improving coping skills.
Meals are a key component of treatment, and there is a dining area where groups have daily supervised meals to regulate eating patterns. This is followed by meal support therapy to process emotions and difficulties that arose during the meal. Diets are not allowed during treatment. In fact, clients participate in classes meal planning and food shopping.
MBHA’s professional team is comprised of social workers, a psychiatrist, therapists, nutritionists, a hypnotherapist and creative arts therapist.
Extras
In addition, MBHA offers gastric band hypnosis for those who have considered surgery or have at least 20 pounds to lose. Hypnotherapy is also offered for relaxation, smoking cessation, anxiety, depression, anger management, or trichotillomania.
MBHA works with outside treatment providers. Many clients are reimbursed from their insurance company using out-of-network benefits. In this case, the facility provides weekly receipts.
