The Basics
Mattie’s House is a woman’s sober living home in Louisville, Kentucky. It was founded in 2004 and today operates three different houses in the Louisville area. Mattie’s House provides women of all ages in the Louisville area with a supportive sober environment to enhance their recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
All three Mattie’s House sober living homes are located in the West Ornsby neighborhood of Louisville. The first of the single-family homes accommodates six residents, the second sleeps seven and the third and largest home has 11 beds. The two smaller homes have one shared bathroom per house and the larger house has two bathrooms shared among the residents. New clients of Mattie’s program live in the large house and then move on to one of the smaller houses as space becomes available. All bedrooms are double-occupancy with two twin beds. The houses are all located relatively close together in West Ornsby, allowing for women to support one another and develop a sober community.
Each house has a communal, fully-equipped kitchen and common rooms for meetings. Residents are permitted cell phones and laptops. On-site laundry facilities are available and residents are responsible for household chores as well. Although Mattie’s House does not provide food or meals, residents typically cook together and share food over a family table.
Rules and Regulations
Mattie’s House requires residents to attend a weekly in-house group meeting. These meetings are led by the house manager and cover topics such as relapse prevention, life skills and money management. The sober living program is nine months in duration, and Mattie’s House aims to help residents find employment and develop self-independence by the time they are discharged. Residents are required to attend an outside 12-step group daily while in the program and most residents attend a minimum of two meetings a day.
Mattie’s House allows women to leave during the day on the weekends, but only with approval from the house manager. The house manager also requires random drug and breathalyzer testing. The house enforces a curfew of 9:30 pm on weeknights and 11:30 pm on weekends. Overnights are permitted, but must be approved by the house manager.
