Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Matrix Institute on Addictions is the birthplace of the Matrix Model, an integrative treatment method that combines group therapy, CBT and relapse prevention techniques. Michael McCann, Matrix Institute’s Director of Research, was one of the substance abuse clinicians who first developed The Matrix Model to respond to the cocaine epidemic enveloping Los Angeles in the 1980s. Since beginning operations in 1984, Matrix Institute has treated over 20,000 addicts and trained thousands of clinicians worldwide in its treatment practices.

Matrix Institute offers an Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) at three locations in Southern California: West Los Angeles, Woodland Hills and Rancho Cucamonga. In Los Angeles, It has also opened an opioid treatment clinic that offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Methadone and Buprenorphine.

Treatment and Staff

The duration of the Matrix Model treatment program is 16 weeks. During this time, clients participate in group therapy three times each week and regular individual therapy—usually once a week. A family group meets for 12 weeks of the treatment plan to help educate the addict’s family on supporting recovery.

The treatment team at Matrix Institute includes Master’s-level therapists such as LMFTs and psychologists. The treatment team is equipped to treat co-occurring disorders and a staff psychiatrist is available for medication management.

Therapy incorporates CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and explores how to handle triggers and build coping mechanisms for relapse prevention. Matrix Institute now offers a weekly mindfulness meditation group as well. It hosts and facilitates 12-step meetings on-site, which clients are asked to attend as part of their treatment plans.

Both the West Los Angeles and Woodland Hills locations have groups specifically for young adults between the ages of 18 and 24, and the Rancho Cucamonga location has an adolescent group for those between the ages of 12 and 17.

Extras

After completing the four-month IOP, clients are encouraged to attend a weekly Continuing Care group for aftercare. Matrix Institute remains on the cutting edge of addiction treatment and is currently working in tandem with the National Institute on Drug Abuse to develop a medication to ease cocaine and methamphetamine addiction.

In Summary

Matrix Institute on Addictions’ Matrix Model is a cornerstone of evidence-based treatment practices in modern addictions medicine. Matrix Institute continues to refine its models and offer clients in southern California its flagship 16-week IOP. By incorporating continuing advancements in MAT, clients can be assured they are receiving some of the best-tested therapy and addiction medication practices in the country.
