Mary’s Hope Sober Homes provides adults with safe sober housing in Littleton, Colorado. The organization offers 11 gender-specific housing options for men and women. All the homes use a faith-based approach and require 12-step involvement. Mary Brewer, the founder of MHSH, organizes and often leads Sunday morning meetings.

Accommodations and Amenities

Each of the 11 homes is quiet, residential neighborhoods. There are currently four female homes and seven male ones, with each holding between four and six residents in private bedrooms. Each room is furnished with a twin or full-sized bed, closets, a nightstand and a lamp. All homes include spacious backyards, dining rooms, fully equipped kitchens and living rooms with cable TV. Other amenities include Wi-Fi and on-site laundry. The homes are close to public transportation and have on-site coordinators available to provide 24-hour support.

Food and personal hygiene items are not provided. Mary’s Hope has a food and clothing bank available to all residents.

Rules and Regulations

Those interested in living at a Mary’s Hope home must either be employed upon admission or get a job within 60 days. Most residents stay in the program for eight months to a year, though the minimum requirement is six months. There is a 10 pm curfew for all clients during the first 30 days, after which curfew is 11 pm. All residents are permitted one overnight stay with family a week. The client’s family must come to the home and check the resident out for the night, returning him or her in the morning. Clients are also expected to do basic household chores and yard work daily, attend four AA/NA meetings a week and obtain a sponsor to help them work the steps.

On Sunday mornings, those who aren’t working are required to attend the Jump Start meeting from 9 am to 10 pm. Each home coordinator provides shuttle service to the main office where the meeting is held. The meeting is something like a non-denominational church service that is either led by Brewer herself or a guest speaker and discusses topics like relapse prevention and spiritual growth. Guest speakers also share their stories and offer solutions for a successful recovery.

Extras

Also included in the house rent is a monthly bus pass, utilities and free counseling services. Residents in need of counseling assistance with resumes, job resources, budgeting and or other personal concerns can schedule an appointment to meet with one of the LPCs at the main office.

There are two organized events held a year, consisting of a daytime barbecue followed by a night of bowling.

In Summary

Mary’s Hope Sober Homes accommodates adult males and females in comfortable and safe homes. It is affordable, has many locations and, for those ready to take on the responsibility of employment and active 12-step participation, is well worth considering.
