Maryland Addiction Recovery Center OutpatientThe Basics

Located in Towson, Maryland, the Maryland Addiction Recovery Center (MARC) provides both residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Its outpatient program offers treatment at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care using evidence-based clinical treatment as coaching for achieving educational and vocational goals.

MARC’s mission is to provide “patients and their families a customized, individualized, and patient-centered treatment approach that promotes long-term recovery and provides the tools necessary to reconstruct their lives free from alcohol and drugs.” It opened its doors in January 2014, though its staff members have several decades of substance abuse treatment experience.

The credentialled staff includes Executive Director, Samuel Bierman (International CADC) who previously held executive positions with the non-profit Caron Centers and the program director, Cheryl Caplan-Zalas (LCSW-C), who spent 10 years developing programs at Baltimore’s Mountain Manor Treatment Center.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are placed in either the evening or daytime IOP. Daytime clients meet for group therapy Monday through Friday from 9 am to 12 pm. As they progress, clients may step down to fewer sessions each week. Evening clients meet for group therapy three times each week. Clients enrolled in either track have individual therapy once a week. The average duration of IOP treatment plans is three months.

Therapy uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). Gender-specific groups are available, as are groups focused on dual diagnosis support. Clients are also encouraged to take advantage of 12-step meetings outside of treatment hours.

The treatment team is made up of CSC addiction counselors and Master’s-level therapists including LCSWs, LMFTs and Licensed Graduate Social Workers (LGSWs). Many members of the team have extensive experience treating co-occurring disorders, and medication managment is supervised by MARC’s psychiatrist and nurse practitioner. MARC also helps incoming clients detox from opiates with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone and Vivitrol.

As clients stabilize in treatment, MARC’s counselors help them identify educational and professional goals and create action plans to achieve them. Clients also receive life coaching services to help them as they work towards these goals.

Extras

MARC offers a family education and support group, which is held twice a month. It recently started an alumni program to support graduates and aid in relapse prevention.

Additionally, MARC has two therapy dogs in the office who provide clients and staff with many opportunities for play and affection (and walks).

In Summary

Maryland Addiction Recovery Center’s IOP offers convenient daytime and evening treatment tracks with groups that address problem-solving, life skills and recovering from trauma. The highly-experienced treatment team is able to treat co-occurring disorders and provide guidance for reaching post-treatment professional and educational goals.
