The Basics
Lutheran Counseling and Family Services of Wisconsin is a faith-based non-profit organization that provides counseling and adoption services throughout the state. The agency can trace its roots back over 100 years when it was founded to help children living in Milwaukee’s crowded orphanages find homes. LCFSW began offering counseling services to adults in the 1960s and now has over 20 offices throughout the state. Its Wauwatosa location, in Milwaukee metropolitan area, offers outpatient substance abuse treatment.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that includes group therapy (usually once or twice each week) and individual therapy as-needed (usually once a week). Groups have fewer than 15 participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors, including LPCs and CSACs.
Group therapy explores the disease model of addiction, handling triggers and other facets of relapse prevention. LCFS encourages clients to attend peer support meetings such as 12-step or Celebrate Recovery and may make it a requirement for some clients depending upon their individualized treatment plans.
The treatment team at LCFS is dually-licensed to treat co-occurring disorders, but clients with significant mental health diagnoses are referred to nearby mental health clinics for additional therapy and medication management.
Most clients complete their outpatient treatment plan in two to four months.
Extras
Family therapy is available for those loved ones who would like to take an active part in a client’s recovery. As clients near the end of their treatment plan, they work with their counselor to create an aftercare plan that may include on-going therapy and peer support meetings.
