The Basics

Situated in the downtown Los Angeles neighborhood of the University of Southern California and across the street from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic (LACGC) is a community-based mental health facility that specializes in the care of children, adolescents and families struggling with an array of mental illnesses. Services are offered for conditions including abuse, homelessness and substance use disorders. This CARF-accredited facility provides individualized counseling, education and interventions for over 3,500 clients a year coming from Central and South Los Angeles communities. Founded in 1924, LACGC is the oldest treatment facility of its kind in the West.

Treatment and Staff

The goal of LACGC is to treat and support the children and families in underserved neighborhoods. The facility aims to improve children’s relationships and well-being as well as guide parents to become better caregivers. Clients begin treatment at LACGC with a comprehensive assessment that simultaneously helps the staff to develop a customized treatment plan and allows clients to describe their specific needs.

Clients engage in individual and group therapy, family therapy, case management, as well as skill building classes like the positive parenting program. The facility provides treatment approaches that integrate a vast array of methods including evidence-based therapies like CBT, trauma-focused CBT as well as other trauma-specific methods like Seeking Safety. Crisis oriented recovery services are offered, including psychotherapy as well as child-parent psychotherapy that treats young children and their parents affected by trauma.

The Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic employs a multi-disciplinary team comprised of include psychologists, LCSWs, case managers and child psychiatrists. Medication is available for those in need of dual diagnosis support.

Extras

The facility also provides mental health screenings for families. In addition, LACGC offer services on-site at public schools for students struggling with behavioral problems including trauma, anger management and gang violence. Through mentoring, vocational education and case management, facility also helps adolescents to young adults to transition into adulthood.

Through the Mental Health Services Act, the LACGC is also able to provide therapy and support including medication and substance use treatment for the caregivers of high-risk children.

In addition, the facility is building a new Learning Center. Individuals can donate on the website.
