Longbranch Healthcare is a new network of treatment facilities in the New Orleans area that cater to adult clients struggling with addiction. There are currently two locations. One is the residential community in Abita Springs, Louisiana. The other is an upscale outpatient clinic located in Old Metairie. The inpatient facility provides 30 to 90 day treatment programs overseen by Dr. Arwen Podesta, the chief medical officer who also serves as the president of the Louisiana Chapter of the Society for Addiction Medicine.
Accommodations and Food
The residential program that fits 32 clients is situated in the former building of the historic Longbranch Hotel. The surrounding area of Abita Springs is serene and picturesque, allowing for total privacy during treatment. The luxurious quarters where clients stay are modernly decorated with a touch of Southern charm.
The facility has large, double occupancy bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a yoga center, a pool, coffee bar and gourmet restaurant where clients dine daily. Common areas include plush lounges with flat-screen TVs with cable, a wrap around balcony, Japanese garden and activity center.
The facility is co-ed, but the men and women clients are separated by floors. Long branch is considering opening an entirely separate women’s wing in the near future.
Treatment and Staff
Longbranch originally opened its doors in response to the opioid crisis that has effected million of Americans over the last couple years. The New Orleans area didn’t have a local treatment facility, thus forcing families to be separated so that an individual could seek the help they needed. Programming is aimed at clients who are dealing with all kinds of addiction and treats the disease of addiction, not just the symptom or specific substance. There are daily one on one therapy sessions in addition to group counseling. Those who come in for an assessment and are in need of detox treatment before entering into residential are able to be accommodated by Covington Behavioral prior to admission.
The programs are abstinence-based with a focus on trauma-informed care along with holistic practices. Treatment is based on the 12-step philosophy in addition to offering SMART Recovery methods as an alternative peer support option. Dual diagnosis clients have access to medication management services in addition to their daily therapeutic programming. Other treatment approaches through Longbranch include The Minnesota Model, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI)
All in all there is a staff of over 50 that serve the client at the Abita Springs location. This includes house managers, restaurant staff and yoga instructors. Clinical staff includes an RN, LPC, CADC and LAC, all of which are sober themselves.
The Longbranch Residential treatment program was devised by a man who found help for his prescription opioid and alcohol addiction and saw a need for the community to have an upscale and private treatment facility that helps by offering a support system. The lovely residence has only been open for about a year, and so far has been successful in its mission to help the New Orleans area in fighting addiction and getting rid of the stigma attached to it. It’s certainly proven to be a valuable asset to the southern Louisiana recovery community.
