The LinkThe Basics

The Link Halfway House offers a safe sober living environment for adult men who have completed residential substance abuse treatment. Located in a mixed commercial/residential neighborhood in Norfolk, Nebraska, about 75 miles southwest of Sioux City, Iowa, Link provides structure for men who are seeking a sober community to support their early recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Link house is a two-story home on a spacious corner lot and accommodates 15 men. There are seven bedrooms, three shared bathrooms, a living room, kitchen and eating area. One of the bedrooms sleeps five, two rooms are single-occupancy and the remaining rooms are double-occupancy. Residents are assigned double or single rooms based on seniority. The house is fully furnished and rooms include twin beds, nightstands and shared dressers and closets.

Laundry facilities, cable TV, Wi-Fi and food are included in the monthly rent. While cleaning supplies and laundry soap are provided, the men are responsible for any personal items. The local YMCA is available for physical fitness and group recreational activities are frequently planned by the residents.

Rules and Regulations

Eligible men must have completed short-term residential treatment and either have a job or be actively seeking employment. Residents are drug-tested weekly and given daily Breathalyzer tests. There is no tolerance for substance abuse, violence, threats or stealing. Clients are expected to keep their personal and shared spaces tidy and must clean up after themselves at all times. In addition, residents are given rotating weekly house chores.

To give clients their best chance at long-term sobriety, Link asks for a six- to nine-month commitment. For the first three months, curfew is at 11 pm Sunday through Thursday and midnight Friday and Saturday. Once a resident has completed this trial period and has maintained employment and sobriety, curfew moves to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 1 am on Friday and Saturday. The resident house manager facilitates a mandatory in-house meeting on Monday nights.

Visitors are allowed in the common areas from 10 am until 9 pm seven days a week, but no overnight guests are permitted. Smoking is allowed outside only.

An LADC facilitates daily group sessions Monday through Friday and schedules individual counseling weekly. Group topics include relapse prevention, addiction studies, anger management, employment issues and budget planning. In addition, there is a group for those with co-occurring disorders.

Residents are expected to attend at least four 12-step meetings per week and house slips must be signed.

Extras

The counseling staff facilitates and coordinates services with Social Security, local food banks, Nebraska Health and Human Services for medical and mental health treatment, and the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for clothing and transportation vouchers.

In Summary

The Link Halfway House offers a structured sober environment for men seeking post-residential treatment support. While independence and responsibility are encouraged, The Link places realistic expectations on clients as they transition into life on their own.
