Located about a half hour from London in the county of Surrey and township of Old Woking, Life Works is a private treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with substance abuse, eating disorders and other mental health issues. Life Works provides comprehensive, individualized treatment programming that utilizes a holistic approach with spiritual, emotional and physical components. Licensed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the regulator of health and social care in England, Life Works provides a full continuum of care including detox, residential treatment, outpatient services, aftercare and interventions.
Accommodations and Food
The Life Works residential treatment program takes place in a charming Georgian manor house in the countryside. The peaceful atmosphere offers a safe and serene place to begin the recovery journey in complete privacy. Surrounded by a lovely manicured lawn, private walled gardens and stone walkways, the home boasts a spacious floor plan, plenty of natural sunlight, several lounge areas equipped with plush furnishings and fireplaces. With room for 17 clients, the atmosphere is communal without sacrificing privacy. Bedrooms are either private or semi-private and equipped with full-sized beds, a desk, closet and an en suite bathroom. While most residents have a roommate, private rooms are available at an additional cost. The facility also offers a gym and library.
Life Works employs an in-house chef that prepares delicious and well-balanced meals and snacks for the residents. Individuals with allergies or dietary restrictions can be accommodated, and clients in the process of detox are permitted to eat meals in their room.
Treatment and Staff
During intake, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment that includes medical, psychiatric and psychological components. This evaluation helps the staff develop the most effective customized treatment plan to meet the specific needs of the client. If needed, Life Works provides a tailored detox program that includes around the clock medical supervision. Clients are provided with private rooms equipped with TV, books and an en suite bathroom. The length of detox varies depending on the specific needs of the client, though short alcohol detox programs are available. Typically clients begin therapeutic work three days into the detox.
Residents spend approximately 30 hours a week in treatment, and Life Works utilizes a broad approach to treatment that integrates a range of therapeutic modalities including experiential methods like music therapy and drama therapy, and evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT. Complementary models like yoga, meditation and Shiatsu, a form of Japanese massage that promotes relaxation, are also implemented. Clients are also introduced to 12-step recovery principles and work through three steps while in residential treatment.
The Life Works team is comprised of a nursing team, counselors, therapists, addiction specialists, a general practitioner, nutritionist, complementary therapists and a psychiatrist. Medication management is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders such as depression, mood disorders, anorexia and bulimia.
Extras
While residents spend much of their time in individual and group therapy, Life Works believes that family engagement is also a significant part of recovery. To this end, the facility provides a two day family works program to help re-establish trust and communication amongst clients and their family. In addition, clients are educated on the nature of the addiction disease in psychoeducation classes, which also focus on strategies to prevent relapse.
