Kings Mountain KentuckyThe Basics

The Liberty Ranch is a 6,500 square foot recovery center on a beautiful ranch that provides a transitional living program with an an extra 1,100 square feet available for leisure time. A stay at the Ranch is offered in packages of 30, 60 and 90 day increments which may total up to a year. There are two houses on-site—one unit for men and one for women. Liberty Ranch offers 12-step meetings, a variety of groups and sessions with licensed therapists, at an extra cost. The Ranch claims that in the near 20 years of its operation 82% of its clients still remain sober.

Accommodations and Amenities

Located about 60 miles south of Lexington, in Kings Mountain, Kentucky, the Ranch offers communal living. There are usually about 24 clients staying at each house at a time, while beds are available for 30. Each house has four rooms, with bunk-beds set up barrack style, fitting up to eight clients to a room.

During the first three to six months, no mobile phone use is allowed but there are in-house landlines from which to call family members. There are two TVs in each house. Two clients in each house are assigned to make everyone’s meals as part of the weekly allotment of chores and house duties. Breakfast and dinner are cooked by the assignees while lunch at the Ranch is a quicker deal, such as soup, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or previous meals’ leftovers.

Rules and Regulations

During their stay clients are expected to attend one 12-step meeting each day. If they are not working, or enrolled in school, clients are expected to also attend an additional meeting. Each day clients set their daily goals before going to one of several groups offered on-site. These include newcomer group, which is offered twice weekly and led by a graduate or senior client, peer group designed to evaluate clients’ performance and attitude once a week, resident family group offered daily at 4:30 pm for issues pertaining to the house. A senior member group is offered once a week and led by a graduate of the program. This group is available only to clients who have been in the house for six or more months.

Group therapy and recreational activities are available throughout the day. Vans are available to transport clients to any outside AA/NA meetings. Note that all staff are graduates of the program, recovering addicts themselves and not always licensed counselors. While the owners have been at the recovery game for 25 years the Ranch is not a medical facility and its approach is not clinical. Clients are encouraged to look out for each other and never leave each other alone, but are still allowed to read independently or watch TV.

Extras

A family group is offered each Saturday and led by staff. This group brings in clients’ families to work with their loved ones on communication and understanding addiction and recovery.

Many recreational activities are available at the Ranch, including hiking, fishing, volleyball, basketball, and billiards. Clients may also barbecue, go swimming, or socialize around a fire pit and take in sunsets and mountain views.

In Summary

The Liberty Ranch has been around since 1996 and has a great reputation. It may not be the right choice for those who need their own space, since the accommodations could seem a little cramped. Yet there is no denying the natural beauty that surrounds the location. For those who don’t mind communal living and need support after residential treatment, this might be a good choice. However, those considering the Ranch should ask themselves: How much personal space do I really need in a bedroom? And: Do I have a few thousand dollars to invest in maintaining my sobriety?
