The Basics
For over 25 years, Legacy Counseling Center has been providing quality mental healthcare, substance abuse treatment and housing for people with HIV and AIDS in Dallas, Texas. Legacy’s outpatient treatment program for addiction offers individualized care using evidence-based practices, with an emphasis on issues unique to those who live with HIV/AIDS.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients are given an treatment plan designed to best serve their needs. Legacy’s substance abuse program demands three basic requirements of all participants: they are HIV-positive with a letter of diagnosis, at least 18 years-old and remain alcohol and drug-free during treatment.
The main track is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which is a 10-hour per week program that lasts nine weeks. It provides recovery support through mandatory three-hour group sessions, three times a week, combined with one hour of individual therapy a week. The less-intensive basic outpatient program can be individually tailored to meet the clients’ needs. It also works within the structure of group and individual counseling but with a focus on relapse prevention. Both programs have an educational component to help clients understand the effects of drugs and alcohol on HIV and AIDS. Specialized groups are available for women and older adult clients.
Treatment consists of evidence-based methods, such as CBT, and individual therapy is scheduled on an as-needed basis. Within the first month, clients are expected to choose an outside peer-support program to attend, like AA or NA. Mental heath issues are addressed for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Staff consists of LPNs, LCSWs and other Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
For those who complete the substance abuse treatment program, aftercare is included and lasts for three to six months. This generally consists of one individual session a month, or as needed.
