La Selva Group Outpatient

[block]0[/block]The Basics

La Selva Group is a part of Momentum for Mental Health, which is based in The Bay Area of Northern California in Palo Alto. This facility offers mental health care along with dual diagnosis outpatient treatment for addiction and substance abuse. The outpatient programming includes a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and step-down Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Treatment is therapy-oriented utilizing evidence-based methods like CBT in addition to holistic approaches.

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient programming at La Selva is individualized to each client’s specific needs and consists of several daily group sessions and at least one individual session weekly. The facility has a college campus like feel to it and offers several different group options, along with recreational activities. Groups are both coed and gender-specific, and address issues of trauma, self esteem, anger management, coping and life skills and relapse prevention techniques. There are also groups specified for dual diagnosis and LGBTQ clients. During their individual therapy, clients work with therapists to identify treatment goals and track progress throughout the program.

The PHP is a full day program, usually up to six hours, that includes breakfast and lunch. The IOP is about three hours, three to five days a week. Therapeutic modalities include DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), EMDR and trauma-informed care. Medication management is available too. There is not a set treatment track that all clients have to adhere to so the length of time in a program varies. It’s also worth noting, programming is not based on the 12-step philosophy, nor is it incorporated, but AA/NA participation is certainly not discouraged.

There is a staff of over 30 at La Selva who offer vast mental health and dual diagnosis experience. The team includes a medical staff of physicians and LPNs, a Master’s-level LMFT, an LCSW, a psychiatrist and a psychologist.

Clients can also expect holistic treatment such as movement therapy, art and music therapy, and weekly equine therapy and yoga sessions. There is also a gym on site, and a music room that features a piano and guitars.

Some of the clientele in outpatient treatment have recently completed a residential program and opt to reside at one of the two sober living facilities operated by La Selva. These facilities consist of a house and apartment building, both of which are monitored by staff to ensure the safety of the clients while they participate in the either the PHP or IOP.

An alumni-oriented aftercare group meets weekly at the facility to participate in group sessions and sober social activities.

In Summary

La Selva Group offers a variety of treatment options and approaches for clients struggling with co-occurring disorders and general mental health issues. There is a sense of individuality that the programs provide, which in turn helps remove the stigma or shame that some clients may have felt prior to treatment, allowing them to feel comfortable with who they are and therefore thrive in recovery. With evidence-based care as well as holistic options and sober living component, La Selva is a solid option for treatment in The Bay Area.
