The Basics
La Amistad Behavioral Health Services has two locations in Central Florida, Maitland and Winter Park. This facility offers both residential and outpatient care for adults and adolescents with mental health disorders or substance abuse. The outpatient options include a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that provide comprehensive therapy services, 12-step support and medication management.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient programs offer a highly structured environment for both age groups in a private facility just outside of Orlando. Many clients in the PHP or IOP have been discharged from an inpatient program and are still in need of intensive support while living at home. The PHP is a full time program, running Mondays through Fridays for six hours a day. These days consist of several group sessions, individualized treatment planning and execution, recreational therapy, psychiatric assessments and, for the younger clients, education provided through La Amistad’s fully accredited on-site school program.
Group therapy addresses relapse prevention, anger management, coping skills, and behavior management. There are also specialty groups that focus on issues like past trauma, sexual abuse or co-occurring disorders. The substance abuse element of these programs has peer lead AA and NA meetings and clients are encouraged to participate in off-site community meetings and find a sponsor for added support.
There is both a substance abuse and mental health IOP. Both of these tracks run three hours per night, three times per week. This step-down program also includes group and individual therapy. Clients have psychoeducation lectures and classes, and participate in trigger prevention, learn about healthy boundaries and improving communication in relationships. There are some written assignment and workbook study in the substance abuse program as well. The IOP usually runs for about eight weeks.
Both of these treatments are operated by Master’s and Doctorate level therapists, CADCs, psychiatrists, RNs, CAPs and medical doctors.
Extras
Family involvement is highly encouraged by the staff of La Amistad in all phases of treatment. The family program for the outpatient tracks includes weekly family therapy, multi family groups and involvement with the Al-Anon community.
Clients also partake in health and wellness classes and in some cases have exercise incorporated into their treatment programs. La Amistad has an on-site wellness center that offers fitness equipment and a pool.

The PHP and IOP at La Amistad are ideal step down programs for those who have successfully discharged from a residential program and are adjusting to their new lives in recovery. There are a variety of support programs and counseling options. This is a great option for clients seeking the opportunity for continued support while living at home as they reintegrate back into their daily lives.
