The Kelly HouseThe Basics

The Kelly House offers a structured sober living facility for men in Wakefield, Massachusetts, just 10 miles north of Boston. The Kelly House was founded by Richard Winant, a recovering alcoholic with over 10 years sober, who is also a certified recovery coach. After working with several sponsees in AA who were in sober living, Winant came to the conclusion that there was a need for a quality mens’ sober house that encouraged residents  to incorporate the 12 steps into their lives. Kelly House hopes to provide a safe, sober and family-oriented atmosphere for men to recover from drug and alcohol addiction.

Accommodations and Amenities

A former nursing home building, Kelly House sits on Lake Quannapowitt with stunning views. The house has 12 bedrooms with double, triple and quad options available. The Kelly House believes the disease of addiction is characterized by isolation, therefore they don’t think it’s a good idea for residents to room alone. Each bedroom provides twin beds, linens, individual closets and bathroom. A computer room is available and there is Wi-Fi throughout the facility.

Residents are expected to buy their own food, and an individual cabinet is assigned for each person. For those that can’t afford their own groceries, Kelly House has a working relationship with a local food bank that will help with food.

Rules and Regulations

Prospective residents at The Kelly House are expected to arrive sober, having completed detox or an inpatient treatment program. Clients will not be accepted if they are on Suboxone or Methadone and those who take other prescribed medication may be only accepted on a case-by-case basis. The Kelly House requires all residents to work a 12-step program.

Residents who are employed must attend a minimum of four AA/NA meetings a week and daily meetings must be attended for those who are unemployed. Getting a sponsor, finding a home group and beginning the 12 steps are required within the first 30 days. All residents are subject to random drug testing. The Kelly House has a zero tolerance policy for any alcohol or drug use.

The staff includes a sober house manager who is a certified LADC. Visitors are only allowed in the communal areas, and no overnight visits are allowed. There is a curfew of 11 pm and weekly house meetings are required for all residents. All residents must pay $150 intake fee, and room-rates start at $175 per week. There is no minimum or maximum stay.

Extras

The Kelly House provides a prayer/meditation room that allows residents for privacy to pray, reflect, meditate or to write.

In Summary

The Kelly House provides a serene and scenic environment for a low cost, but only for those who are willing to commit to getting involved in the 12-step recovery process. The Kelly House is a no-nonsense program that believes strongly in community, peer support and learning how to live and enjoy life without the use of drugs and alcohol.
