The Basics

With two offices in the San Francisco Bay area, Kaitlin Geenen is a licensed MFT that specializes in the outpatient care of clients struggling with eating disorders in addition to persons with addictions and mental illnesses like anxiety and depression. Practicing in both San Francisco and the neighboring city of Livermore, Geenen believes in healing the “whole person” rather than simply treating symptoms, and provides a honest and safe environment that fosters personal growth. Following her own long, personal struggle with eating disorders, Geenen opened a private practice to treat those going through the same challenges. She utilizes a focused and integrative holistic approach to treatment that synchronizes several evidence-based therapies with psychodynamic therapy. Greenen primarily offers outpatient therapy for those coping with eating disorders and is not licensed to prescribe medication. In addition, the 12-step recovery method is not a component of Geenen’s programming.

Treatment

While Geenen provides treatment for clients battling a range of alcohol and substance use disorders as well as mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, her specialty is eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Before beginning therapy, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment to help determine the most effective therapy to meet the specific needs and goals of the individual. In addition, Geenen offers a free 20-minute consultation over the phone before the first appointment. Clients are encouraged to ask questions at this time to assess if therapy is a good fit.

Geenen offers a holistic treatment approach that utilizes evidence-based and psychodynamic therapeutic methods. Evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT have been proven to be successful for clients with eating disorders. As such, Geenen employs DBT, CBT as well as mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) that combines cognitive therapy with meditative practices and awareness. In addition, Geenen uses psychodynamic therapy to foster lasting change from negative patterns. Clients engage in individual therapy with Geenen and are invited to participate in group therapy as well.

In addition, Geenen facilititates DBT groups to teach practical skills including mindfulness, emotional intelligence, interpersonal capability and stress management. DBT skills groups are held to only four participants who must make a six-month commitment and already be in individual therapy.

Prior to opening a private practice, Kaitlin Geenen worked with the La Ventana Eating Disorder Program, the Cielo House Treatment Center, New Perspectives Center for Counseling and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Geenen studied at UCLA and received her Master’s in counseling psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. She performed post-graduate training in the fields of family-based therapy for eating disorders and DBT. Geenen is licensed through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Extras

Geenen recognizes family involvement as a considerable component to the success of a sustainable recovery. To this end, she offers parental education in addition to individual and group therapy. Parents of clients with eating disorders are supported and taught how to best help their son or daughter.

In addition, Geenen provides care for mothers and soon-to-be mothers with an array of conditions including post-partum issues, being a working mother, self-care, miscarriage, pregnancy and parenting.
